Question:

Is it allowed in Islam to urinate while standing?

Sharī‘ah Ruling on Standing While Urinating

There is no harm in urinating while standing, particularly when:
  1. The need arises,
  2. The location is private — i.e., the ‘awrah (private part) is not exposed,
  3. And there is no risk of urine splashing onto the body or clothes.

📖 Prophetic Practice

It is reported from Ḥudhayfah رضي الله عنه:
"أنّ النّبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أتى سُبَاطةَ قومٍ فبالَ قائمًا"
“The Prophet ﷺ came to a garbage dump of some people and urinated while standing.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 224, also cited in Musnad Imām Aʿẓam, translated by Dōst Muḥammad Shākir, p. 46

This narration is also found under the heading "البَولُ قائِمًا" (Urinating while standing) in books of ḥadīth such as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.

What is Preferred?

➤ Though standing is permissible,
Sitting and urinating is better due to the following reasons:
  1. The Prophet’s ﷺ regular habit was to urinate sitting down
  2. Better concealment of the private area
  3. Reduced chance of urine splashes, which are a major cause of impurity
