❖ Question:
What is the ruling if someone deliberately travels as an excuse to avoid fasting?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
✿ Answer:
It is forbidden to make travel a pretext for breaking the fast. However, in such a case, the person is allowed to break the fast, but he must later make up the missed fast.
❀ Statement of Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله:
مَنْ تَعَمَّدَ السَّفَرَ لِيُفْطِرَ فَهُوَ آثِمٌ، وَلَكِنَّهُ يُفْطِرُ وَيَقْضِي
"Whoever deliberately travels in order to break the fast is sinful. However, he may break the fast, and he will have to make it up later."
(al-Majmūʿ Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab: 6/172)

① Deliberately traveling to avoid fasting is a sinful act.
② Despite this, the traveler is still permitted to break the fast.
③ He must later make up (qaḍāʾ) for the missed fast.
