Is It Permissible to Take a Date from in Front of Someone Else During a Meal?

Derived from: Ahkam wa Masail, Rulings Related to Food and Drink, Volume 1, Page 444

❖ Question:

It is said that one should eat from what is in front of them. However, my friends argue that while this rule is correct in general, it is permissible to take dates from in front of someone else. Is this correct?

✅ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!

No, this claim is not correct.

✿ Islamic Etiquette of Eating:

◈ It is part of Islamic manners of eating that each person should eat from what is directly in front of them.
It is not appropriate to take from the portion placed in front of someone else — whether it is a date or any other item.
◈ Adhering to these etiquettes aligns with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and brings blessings to the meal.
