Is It Permissible to Offer Sunnah Prayers Before the Adhan?

Ruling on Performing Sunnah Prayers Before the Adhan

❖ Question:

If the Adhan for Zuhr is scheduled for 12:45 PM and the prayer time has already begun, but the Adhan has not yet been called—can a person offer Sunnah prayers before the Adhan in such a situation?

❖ Answer by Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (ḥafiẓahullāh):

It is permissible to offer Sunnah prayers once the time for the obligatory prayer has begun, even if the Adhan has not yet been called. The following points clarify this matter:

✔ Commencement of Prayer Time

◈ When the time for a particular prayer enters, performing the Sunnah prayer becomes permissible, even if the Adhan has not yet been made.

Status of Adhan and Iqamah

◈ Both the Adhan and Iqamah are Sunnah acts. Observing them is commendable, but in their absence, it is still valid to perform both optional and obligatory prayers.

Ruling on Obligatory Prayers

◈ If someone is alone or in a location where there is no mosque, and they intend to pray without congregation, then even the obligatory prayer may be offered without the Adhan.

❖ Summary:

◈ It is legally permissible to offer Sunnah prayers before the Adhan, provided that the time for the prayer has begun.
◈ Both obligatory and optional prayers can be performed without the Adhan or Iqamah if there is a valid reason.
