Is It Permissible to Marry Paternal Aunt's Husband's Sister?

Source: Taken from the book “Aḥkām wa Masā’il – Kitāb wa Sunnat kī Roshnī mein” by Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on marrying the sister of one's paternal aunt’s husband (i.e., phuphi’s husband’s sister)? Please clarify in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

❖ Answer:

In light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, the seven relationships that are impermissible (ḥarām) to marry due to lineage are:

① Mother
② Sister
③ Daughter
④ Niece (brother's daughter)
⑤ Niece (sister's daughter)
⑥ Paternal aunt (phuphi)
⑦ Maternal aunt (khala)

Furthermore, those relationships that are ḥarām due to lineage are also prohibited through suckling (raḍāʿah), such as:

➤ Foster mother
➤ Foster sister
➤ Foster paternal aunt, etc.

As for the sister of one's paternal aunt’s husband, she does not fall under the category of those relationships that are ḥarām in Sharīʿah. Therefore, it is permissible to marry her.

❖ Ruling Summary:

The sister of your paternal aunt's husband (phuphi’s husband’s sister) is not a maḥram by lineage or suckling. Hence, marriage with her is allowed in Islam.
