Islamic Ruling on Killing Fireflies for Medicinal Use
❖ Question:
Is it permissible in Islam to kill fireflies for the purpose of making medicine?
❖ Answer by Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullāh
① Lack of Established Knowledge:
As of now, there is no established information known to the Shaykh regarding the use of fireflies for the treatment of any disease.
② Permissibility Based on Necessity and Experimentation:
If it is proven through experimentation that fireflies are beneficial in curing a specific disease, some scholars allow their use for medicinal purposes.
③ Prohibition of Unnecessary Killing:
It is not permissible to kill any living creature without valid need.
Taking a life without necessity is discouraged in Islam.
④ Rulings Regarding Insects in Shariah:
In general, explicit rulings regarding insects are limited in Islamic texts, and such matters are often assessed based on principles of necessity and harm.
⑤ Confirmation of Medicinal Benefit:
If verified and confirmed that fireflies have genuine medicinal benefit, then killing them for treatment purposes may be allowed under the principle of necessity.
✔ If medical research confirms a legitimate therapeutic use of fireflies, then using them for treatment—when truly needed—may be permissible.
Otherwise, killing them without valid reason is not allowed in Islamic law.
