Is it permissible to purchase a sacrificial animal on credit for Qurbānī (Udhiyyah)?
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد:
✔ It is absolutely permissible to perform Qurbānī by purchasing the animal on credit.
Just as a person fulfills minor and daily needs through borrowing, similarly, Qurbānī is also a religious obligation and need that may be fulfilled in the same way.
✔ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also accomplished significant religious tasks on credit.
① In Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ, under the chapter Bāb al-Iflās (On Bankruptcy), p. 252, it is mentioned that:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once took a loan of forty thousand.
② A similar narration is found in Bāb al-Ribā (Chapter on Usury).
③ In Fatḥ al-Bārī, it is mentioned:
Sayyidunā ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه became heavily indebted due to fulfilling religious needs.
Based on these evidences, taking a small loan for Qurbānī is neither difficult nor blameworthy.
◈ If someone takes a loan to perform Qurbānī but later causes distress to the creditor by delaying payment, or becomes negligent in repaying the loan on time—
then there is a fear that such negligence may render the act of worship void.
◈ Therefore, special care must be taken to repay any loan taken for noble and religious purposes on time and with full responsibility.
