Is It Permissible to Bury Muslims in Non-Muslim Cemeteries?

◈ Ruling on Burying Muslims in Non-Muslim Graveyards ◈
✍️ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ The Islamic Ruling

It is not permissible to bury Muslims in the graveyards of disbelievers (kuffār). This practice is strongly discouraged in Islamic teachings.

✦ Scholarly Opinion

Shaykh Ibn Bāz رحمه الله stated:

❝Such an act is absolutely impermissible. During the time of the Prophet ﷺ and the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Khulafā’ al-Rāshidīn), Muslims never buried their dead among the non-Muslims.❞
Source: al-Fatāwā al-Islāmiyyah: 2/24

❖ Reasoning Behind the Ruling

Separation of Muslim and non-Muslim burial sites is part of maintaining Islamic identity and honoring the deceased believers.

Mixing graves can lead to disrespect, confusion in religious rites, and deviation from the Sunnah.

Muslim graveyards are consecrated spaces, governed by Islamic rituals and practices.

✅ Summary:

◉ It is not allowed to bury Muslims in disbelievers’ graveyards.
◉ This practice contradicts the prophetic and righteous tradition.
◉ Muslims must be buried in designated Islamic cemeteries whenever possible.
