What is the Islamic ruling on a woman making a hair bun on top of her head?
According to the scholars, making a hair bun on the top of the head falls under the category of prohibition and warning mentioned in the following Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:
«صِنفَانِ مِن أَهلِ النَّارِ لَم أَرَهُما...»
“There are two types of people from the inhabitants of Hell whom I have not seen yet:
① Men who have whips like the tails of cows, with which they beat people, and
② Women who are dressed yet appear naked, who walk with allure and sway others toward themselves.
Their heads are like the bent humps of camels.
They will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance, even though its fragrance can be perceived from such and such a distance.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Libās wa al-Zīnah, Bāb 34]
In this Hadith, the Prophet ﷺ describes those women:
✘ Therefore, gathering hair into a bun on the top of the head is impermissible due to resemblance with the mentioned description.
✔ However, if a woman ties her hair lower, such as near the nape of the neck, then there is no harm, provided she does not expose it outside.
✘ But if she goes to the market with her hair in such a style and it appears from under the ‘Abayah, this is a form of tabarruj (display of beauty), which is prohibited due to the potential of causing fitnah (temptation).
