❀ The Sharʿī Ruling on Women Performing Iʿtikāf in the Mosque ❀
🖋 Written by: Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī ḥafiẓahullāh
Question:
Some women observe Iʿtikāf at home. Is it necessary for women to perform Iʿtikāf in the mosque as well?
Answer:
Yes, women should also perform Iʿtikāf in the mosque.
There is no Sharʿī evidence supporting the idea that women may observe Iʿtikāf at home.
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ﴾
“And do not have relations with them while you are in Iʿtikāf in the mosques.”
[Al-Baqarah: 187]
This verse clearly indicates that Iʿtikāf is to be performed in the mosque.
Furthermore, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ also performed Iʿtikāf in the mosque, as established in authentic aḥādīth.
