Is It Necessary to Verbally Express the Intention During Talbiyah?

Source: Fatawa Arkan-e-Islam

❖ Question

At the beginning of Hajj or Umrah, is it necessary to verbally pronounce the words of intention during Talbiyah?

❖ Answer

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma ba‘d!

When commencing Hajj or Umrah, having the intention in the heart is sufficient, and it is not necessary to utter specific words of intention with the tongue.

✔ If you are intending to perform Umrah, then you should say:
"لَبَّيْکَ عُمْرَةً"
✔ And if you are intending to perform Hajj, then you should say:
"لَبَّيْکَ حَجًّا"

These phrases are known as Talbiyah, and this is the prescribed and legislated way.

✖ Verbalizing Intention with Additional Phrases

Uttering clear sentences of intention such as:

❌ "O Allah! I intend to perform Umrah,"
❌ Or "I intend to perform Hajj,"

is not permissible, because such verbal expressions of intention are not proven from the Noble Prophet ﷺ.

ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
