Is It Disliked to Face a Worshipper During Salah?

Facing a Person Who Is Praying – Is It Disliked?

This article is derived from the book Sutrah: Brief Rulings and Issues, compiled by respected Qazi Ibrahim Sharif.

❀ Dislike for Facing a Worshipper During Prayer

It has been reported that Umar رضي الله عنه, Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما, and Uthman ibn Affan رضي الله عنه disliked the practice of a person facing another who is engaged in prayer, due to the potential for distraction and disturbance.

However, turning one’s back toward a worshipper does not pose the same risk of distraction and is not disapproved.

❀ Ibn Umar’s Practice When No Column Was Available

كان ابن عمر اذا لم يجد سبيلا الى سارية من سواري المسجد قال لي ولني ظهرك
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah – Kitab al-Salat – Chapter: Can a Man Serve as Sutrah for Another? (Hadith: 2878)

Naafi‘ رحمه الله narrated: “Whenever Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما could not find space near any of the pillars of the mosque, he would say to me: ‘Turn your back toward me.’”

This narration shows that Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما preferred that a person face away from the one praying, so as not to create visual interference in the prayer.

❀ Scholarly Views on Facing a Worshipper

Al-‘Ayni رحمه الله documented that the following scholars held the opinion that facing someone who is offering prayer is generally disliked without exception:

  • Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه
  • Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه
  • Sa‘id ibn Jubayr رحمه الله
  • Imam Malik رحمه الله

These scholars considered the act of intentionally facing a praying individual to be an undesirable behavior due to its potential to disturb concentration and humility (khushu‘) during Ṣalāh.

✿ Summary of Key Points:

① Facing a worshipper during prayer is disliked by several senior Companions and scholars due to the potential for distraction.
Turning your back toward a praying person is not objectionable and was a practice of the Salaf.
③ Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما would ask someone to stand with their back toward him when no object (e.g., a pillar) was available as a Sutrah.
④ Scholars such as Umar, Ibn Mas‘ud, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, and Imam Malik all held that facing a worshipper should be avoided entirely.
