❖ Question
Is it permissible to call the Noble Prophet ﷺ “Ḥabībullāh” (the Beloved of Allah)? What is the ruling of Sharī‘ah regarding this?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
- It is undoubtedly permissible to call the Prophet ﷺ Ḥabībullāh.
- The Prophet ﷺ is both the one who loves Allah and the one loved by Allah.
- However, the reality is that Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ a station even higher and loftier than this: the station of Khalīlullāh (the intimate friend of Allah).
◈ The Prophet ﷺ as Khalīlullāh
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself declared his station:
«اِنَّ اللّٰهَ اتَّخَذَنِی خَلِيْلًا کَمَا اتَّخَذَ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ خَلِيْلًا»
(Sunan Ibn Mājah, al-Muqaddimah, Bāb Faḍl al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Ḥadīth 141)
Translation:
“Indeed, Allah has taken me as His Khalīl, just as He took Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām) as His Khalīl.”
◈ The Rank of Khullah is Higher than Mahabbah
- If someone describes the Prophet ﷺ only as “Ḥabībullāh,” he is in fact lowering his true rank.
- Khullah (intimate friendship) is a station higher and superior to mere maḥabbah (love).
- Every believer may be considered a beloved (maḥbūb) of Allah,
- But the unique distinction granted to the Prophet ﷺ is the rank of Khalīlullāh.
- This same rank was also given to Prophet Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām).
- Hence, we say: Muḥammad ﷺ is Khalīlullāh.
◈ Difference Between Khullah and Mahabbah
- Khullah does not mean simple love; rather, it signifies a degree beyond love.
- It reflects the highest and most perfect level of divine love.
- This quality surpasses the title “Ḥabībullāh,” because it includes love and its ultimate perfection.
