Is Fidya (Compensation) Required for a Missed Sajdah Tilawah?

Answer by Monthly Al-Sunnah, Jhelum

Giving Fidya (compensation) for a missed Sajdah Tilawah is unproven and non-Shar‘i. It is an unnecessary hardship and resembles the practices of the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab).

Opinion of Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ (رحمه الله)

Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ (رحمه الله) writes:

"If Sajdah Tilawah is missed, then as a precaution, one should give charity equivalent to one and three-quarter seer (approximately 1.6 kg) of wheat or its monetary value. And Allah knows best!"
[Jawahir al-Fiqh: 1/393]

Lack of Evidence

There is no authentic Islamic evidence supporting this practice, as Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ (رحمه الله) himself did not provide any proof for this ruling.

Conclusion

Giving Fidya for a missed Sajdah Tilawah is neither proven from the Quran and Sunnah nor from the practice of the Companions. Hence, it is an unnecessary innovation and should not be followed.
