Is Fasting on Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha Allowed in Islam?

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on fasting on the day of Eid?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

✿ Answer:

It is prohibited and impermissible to fast on the day of Eid.

❀ Ḥadīth Evidence:

Sayyidunā Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

لَا صِيَامَ فِي يَوْمَيْنِ: يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى
"There is no fasting on two days: the Day of Fiṭr and the Day of Aḍḥā."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1990; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1138)

✅ Conclusion:
① Fasting on Eid al-Fiṭr is prohibited.
② Fasting on Eid al-Aḍḥā is also prohibited.
③ Both days are days of celebration, feasting, and worship, not of fasting.
