Irregular Menstruation Due to Uterine Fibroids and the Rulings on Salah

📝 Question:
A woman suffers from a uterine condition (fibroids), causing her menstruation to be irregular. Sometimes the bleeding stops, sometimes it is just spotting, and at other times there is no bleeding at all. She is confused about the rulings regarding her prayers. Please provide clear Sharʿī guidance.

📘 Answer by Shaykh Ḥāfiẓ Khiḍr Ḥayāt (ḥafiẓahullāh)

◉ Sharʿī Ruling for the Sister in Question

According to Shaykh Ḥāfiẓ Khiḍr Ḥayāt, the following rulings apply:

① Determining Menstrual Days

❖ The woman should refer to her habitual menstrual cycle — i.e., the number of days she regularly experienced bleeding before the onset of illness.

❖ These previously regular days will be counted as her actual days of menstruation (ḥayḍ).

❖ After these days end, she must perform ghusl (ritual bath) to attain purification.

② Bleeding Beyond Regular Days

❖ Any blood that appears after her known menstrual days, whether spotting or heavy, will be considered istihāḍah (irregular bleeding due to illness).

Istihāḍah is not considered menstruation, and its rulings differ from ḥayḍ.

③ Rulings Regarding Prayer (Ṣalāh)

❖ During istihāḍah, the woman is required to perform a fresh wuḍūʾ for every obligatory prayer.

❖ After performing wuḍūʾ, she may offer:

  • Obligatory (farḍ) prayers
  • Sunnah and nafl (voluntary) prayers
without repeating wuḍūʾ, as long as the time for that particular prayer remains.

◉ Summary of the Ruling

❶ Her habitual monthly days are to be treated as ḥayḍ (menstruation).
Any bleeding beyond those days is istihāḍah, i.e., irregular and non-menstrual.
❸ During istihāḍah, she should:

  • Perform wuḍūʾ for each ṣalāh,
  • And pray all obligatory and voluntary prayers in that time without issue.
