✦ The Reported Event
Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: A man from the tribe of Aslam narrated to me—he was one who remembered events well. Indeed, Abu Jahl came near Mount Safa to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He caused harm to him, abused him, disparaged his religion, and belittled his mission in a manner the Prophet ﷺ disliked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not respond to him. Meanwhile, a slave girl of ‘Abdullah ibn Jud’an al-Taymi was present in her home atop Safa and heard all of this.Abu Jahl then left and went to a gathering of the Quraysh near the Ka‘bah. Shortly afterward, Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn ‘Abdul-Muttalib (RA) arrived with his bow hanging, returning from hunting. Whenever he returned from a hunt, he would pass by the Quraysh, greet them, and converse with them. He was the most respected among them and known for his strong sense of honor—though at that time he was still a polytheist, following the religion of his people.
As he passed the slave girl, she said:
"O Abu ‘Umārah! If only you had seen what Abu al-Hakam just did to your nephew! He insulted him, harmed him, and said things he disliked, while Muhammad ﷺ did not say anything in return."
Sayyiduna Hamzah became enraged, for Allah intended to honor him. Without stopping, he rushed to the gathering with his bow in hand. When he entered the mosque and saw Abu Jahl among his people, he approached him, stood near his head, and struck him with his bow, severely injuring him.
Some men from Banu Makhzum rose to support Abu Jahl, saying:
"O Hamzah! We see that you have become irreligious!"
Sayyiduna Hamzah replied:
"And why would anything stop me when it is now completely clear to me? I bear witness that he (Muhammad ﷺ) is indeed the Messenger of Allah and what he says is the truth. By Allah! I will never back away. If you are truthful, try to stop me!"
Abu Jahl then said:
"Leave Abu ‘Umārah alone; indeed, I was the one who insulted his nephew."
Thus, Sayyiduna Hamzah embraced Islam and remained firm on the commitment he made to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
