❖ What Constitutes Compatibility (Kafā’ah) in a Spouse?
Regarding the person who is considered compatible (kufw) for a girl —
In what aspects should this compatibility be considered?
The jurists have long differed over this issue, but the stronger opinion is that:
There is no requirement for them to be equal in anything beyond that.
The narrations that emphasize compatibility in lineage or other worldly aspects are either weak or do not contain clear evidence for this specific matter.
❖ Evidences Supporting Compatibility in Religion & Character Only
➊ Allah says:
"O mankind! We created you from a single male and female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may recognize one another."
"Indeed, the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you."
(Al-Ḥujurāt: 13)
➋ "Do not marry polytheistic women until they believe."
(Al-Baqarah: 221)
➌ "A fornicator does not marry except a female fornicator or a polytheist."
(Al-Nūr: 3)
➍ Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"When someone whose dīn (religion) and akhlāq (character) you are pleased with proposes to you, marry him.
If you do not do so, there will be trials and widespread corruption on earth."
(Ḥasan – Irwā’ al-Ghalīl: 1868; Tirmidhī: 1084)
These evidences clearly establish that compatibility is considered solely in religion and character.
❖ Views of the Scholars
✔ Imām Mālik رحمه الله:
Kafā’ah is only restricted to dīn.
(Nayl al-Awṭār: 4/206)
✔ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله:
By consensus, compatibility in dīn is considered.
Therefore, it is impermissible for a Muslim woman to marry a disbeliever.
(Fatḥ al-Bārī: 10/165)
✔ Shawkānī رحمه الله:
Compatibility in dīn is unanimously acknowledged.
(Al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 2/300)
❖ Compatibility Not Required in Wealth or Lineage
➤ Wealth:
Compatibility in wealth is not a condition.
For example, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه (a wealthy merchant) married his sister to Bilāl رضي الله عنه, who was a freed slave.
(Dāraqutnī: 3/302)
➤ Lineage:
Compatibility in lineage is also not necessary.
The Prophet ﷺ arranged the marriage of Zayd ibn Ḥārithah رضي الله عنه (a former slave) with Zaynab bint Jaḥsh رضي الله عنها, a noblewoman of the Quraysh.
(Tafsīr al-Lubāb fī ʿUlūm al-Kitāb: 15/553)
❖ Age Consideration in Marriage
While a young girl can be married to an older man, as was the case with the Prophet ﷺ marrying ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها when she was 9 years old and he was 54 years old,
It is more appropriate to consider age compatibility as well.
For example, Abū Bakr and ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما proposed to Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها, but the Prophet ﷺ said:
"She is too young."
Then, ʿAlī رضي الله عنه proposed, and the Prophet ﷺ married her to him.
(Ṣaḥīḥ — al-Taʿlīqāt al-Raḍiyyah 2/151; Nasā’ī: 2/70)
Conclusion:
✔ Compatibility in dīn and akhlāq is the only essential criterion for marriage in Islam.
✔ Wealth, lineage, and social status are not binding conditions.
✔ Age difference is not forbidden, but closer age is more suitable.
