Importance of Kind Treatment Toward One’s Wife in Islam

❖ A Man Is Obligated to Treat His Wife with Kindness​

✿ Quranic Injunction​


➊ Allah ﷻ commands:​


وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
“Live with them in kindness.”
[Surah An-Nisāʾ: 19]


→ This verse establishes the foundational principle of compassionate and respectful conduct in marital life.


✿ Prophetic Teachings on Gentle Treatment of Women​


➋ Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayrah (RA) reported:​


The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Treat women kindly. Verily, woman was created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its upper portion. If you attempt to straighten it, you will break it. If you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. Therefore, treat women kindly.”
In another narration from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
“To break it is to divorce her.”
[Bukhari: 5184–5185; Muslim: 1468; Ahmad: 2/449; Ibn Ḥibbān: 4179]



→ The Hadith highlights that patience and understanding are essential in dealing with a wife's emotional nature.


➌ Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayrah (RA) narrated:​


The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Let not a believing man hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her traits, he will surely be pleased with another.”
[Ahmad: 2/329; Muslim: 1469]



→ Islam encourages husbands to focus on the positive attributes of their wives and exercise tolerance.


➍ Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayrah (RA) narrated:​


The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best among you are those who are best to their wives."
[Sahih: Al-Silsilah As-Ṣaḥīḥah: 285; Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ aṣ-Ṣaghīr: 3265; Abu Dawood: 4682; Tirmidhi: 1162; Ahmad: 2/250; Ibn Ḥibbān: 4176]



➎ Ḥaḍrat ʿĀ’ishah (RA) reported:​


The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best of you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family."
[Sahih: Al-Silsilah As-Ṣaḥīḥah: 285; Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ: 3314; Tirmidhi: 3895; Dārimī: 2/159]



→ The Prophet ﷺ is the ultimate model of excellent behavior toward one’s spouse.


✿ Fulfilling Her Rights with Generosity​


A man's good treatment includes providing for his wife's financial needs, such as food, clothing, and general care.


➏ Ḥaḍrat Muʿāwiyah al-Qushayrī (RA) narrated:​


A man asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“What is the right of a wife upon her husband?”
He ﷺ replied:
“Feed her when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike her on the face, do not curse her, and if you must separate, do not do so except within the house.”

✅ Conclusion​


Islam lays great emphasis on kindness, patience, and generosity in how a man treats his wife. The best among men are those who reflect the noble character of the Prophet ﷺ in their marital conduct.
Men must uphold their wives’ dignity by fulfilling their rights, forgiving shortcomings, and maintaining a home environment of love and mutual respect.
