Impact of Sins on the Reward of Ḥajj

Does Committing Sins Reduce the Reward of Ḥajj? A Detailed Explanation
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām

❖ The Ruling

Committing sins undoubtedly reduces the reward of Ḥajj and negatively affects its spiritual impact.

❖ Evidence from the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ الْحَجَّ فَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِي الْحَجِّ﴾
“Whoever has made Ḥajj obligatory upon himself in these months, then let there be no sexual relations, no sin, and no disputes during Ḥajj.”
(Al-Baqarah 2:197)

This verse clearly commands avoiding:

  • Al-rafath (obscene talk or sexual relations),
  • Al-fusūq (sinful acts),
  • Al-jidāl (disputes and arguments)
    — all of which harm the sanctity and reward of Ḥajj.

❖ Scholarly Opinions

Some scholars:

  • Hold that committing sins during Ḥajj can invalidate the Ḥajj entirely, arguing from the Qur’anic prohibition.

The majority (jumhūr) of scholars:

  • Maintain that if the sin is not directly related to the act of worship itself, then it does not invalidate the Ḥajj.
  • However, it still reduces the reward.
  • Sins are prohibited at all times, not only in the state of iḥrām, but during Ḥajj the prohibition becomes even more emphasized.

❖ Conclusion

  • Ḥajj is not nullified by committing sins,
  • But the reward is diminished proportionally to the sins committed.
  • The pilgrim should strive to maintain purity of speech and action throughout the pilgrimage to attain the promised reward of an accepted Ḥajj.
