How Wailing Brings Shayṭān Back Into the Home After Death

✿ The Entry of Shayṭān into the Home Where Wailing Takes Place

❀ Ḥadīth:

“When Abū Salamah (my former husband) passed away, I said: ‘He died as a stranger in a foreign land. I will cry over him in such a way that people will speak about it.’
So, I had prepared myself to weep over him. At that moment, a woman from the highlands of Madinah approached, intending to assist me in wailing.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and addressed that woman:
‘Do you want to bring Shayṭān into a house from which Allah has expelled him — and you want to bring him in twice?’
After hearing this, I refrained from crying and did not weep.”

✔ Summary:

✦ Wailing and organized mourning invite Shayṭān’s entry into a home.
✦ Even a righteous home, once cleansed of evil, can be defiled again through actions like niyāḥah (wailing).
✦ The Prophet ﷺ directly warned against facilitating such practices, equating them with reintroducing Shayṭān into a purified space.
✦ This ḥadīth also shows the strength of character and submission of the righteous companions like Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها, who immediately complied upon hearing the Prophet’s ﷺ rebuke.
