❖ Question
How should a person recite “Bismillah” while in the bathroom?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
- When a person is in the bathroom (whether a toilet or bath area), Bismillah should not be pronounced aloud.
- Instead, it should be remembered in the heart, meaning said silently in one’s intention or mind.
Ruling on Saying Bismillah Before Wuḍūʾ or Ghusl
- The opinion that reciting Bismillah before wuḍūʾ is obligatory is not considered strong.
- Imam Aḥmad (رحمه الله) stated:
There is no authentic ḥadīth proven from the Prophet ﷺ regarding saying Bismillah at the start of wuḍūʾ. - For this reason, al-ʿAllāmah al-Muwaffaq (author of al-Mughnī) and other scholars held that:
- Reciting Bismillah at the start of wuḍūʾ is Sunnah, not wājib.
Practical Guidance
- If one is in the bathroom:
- Do not say Bismillah aloud.
- Say it silently in the heart.
- By doing so:
- One follows the Sunnah.
- One maintains adab (proper etiquette) in a place where Allah’s name is not pronounced aloud.
