Reciting Bismillah in the Bathroom: Complete Sharʿi Guidance
(Source: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam)

❖ Question

How should a person recite “Bismillah” while in the bathroom?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

  • When a person is in the bathroom (whether a toilet or bath area), Bismillah should not be pronounced aloud.
  • Instead, it should be remembered in the heart, meaning said silently in one’s intention or mind.

Ruling on Saying Bismillah Before Wuḍūʾ or Ghusl

  • The opinion that reciting Bismillah before wuḍūʾ is obligatory is not considered strong.
  • Imam Aḥmad (رحمه الله) stated:
There is no authentic ḥadīth proven from the Prophet ﷺ regarding saying Bismillah at the start of wuḍūʾ.
  • For this reason, al-ʿAllāmah al-Muwaffaq (author of al-Mughnī) and other scholars held that:
    • Reciting Bismillah at the start of wuḍūʾ is Sunnah, not wājib.

Practical Guidance

  • If one is in the bathroom:
    • Do not say Bismillah aloud.
    • Say it silently in the heart.
  • By doing so:
    • One follows the Sunnah.
    • One maintains adab (proper etiquette) in a place where Allah’s name is not pronounced aloud.
