How to Perform the Four Sunnah Rak‘ahs After Jumu‘ah Prayer – Two by Two or Four Together?
Reference: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 528
❖ The Question:
After the Jumu‘ah (Friday) prayer, if one wishes to offer four rak‘ahs of Sunnah, should they be performed two by two, or all four together?
❖ The Answer:
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
◈ Both methods are permissible:
- One may pray two rak‘ahs separately (2+2).
- Or pray four rak‘ahs continuously without breaking between them.
Additional Notes on Other Prayers
◈ If someone arrives before the congregational Ẓuhr prayer and offers only two rak‘ahs, it is valid.
◈ If he offers the first two rak‘ahs of Sunnah after the Ẓuhr prayer, that is also valid.
❖ Sunnahs Before Jumu‘ah
◈ There is no confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) before Jumu‘ah proven from the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ However, one may pray any number of voluntary (nafl) prayers according to his ability and devotion.
◈ These nafl prayers do not become obligatory after one starts them, as the Qur’an says:
﴿مَا عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ﴾
“There is no blame upon the believers.”
◈ If he completes these voluntary prayers after Jumu‘ah, it is an excellent act.
◈ The same ruling applies to Sunnahs of other obligatory prayers.
❖ On Preserving the Sunnah Prayers
◈ Negligence in performing the Sunnah prayers is blameworthy.
◈ Regular observance and protection of the Sunān al-Rawātib (regular Sunnahs) is necessary, as they complete and beautify the obligatory prayers.
