How Satan Plants Evil Thoughts in the Human Heart

❀ The Reality of Satanic Whisperings in the Heart ❀
Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha

❖ Question:

Does Satan implant sinful thoughts in the heart?

❖ Answer:

It is narrated from ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

[Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Hadith No. 2988]

“Satan has a whispering in the heart of the son of Adam, and the angel also has a whispering. As for the whispering of Satan, it involves promises of evil and denial of the truth. The angel's whispering brings promises of good and affirmation of the truth. Whoever feels the second type (good and truth), let him know it is from Allah, and he should praise Allah. But whoever feels the first type (evil and denial), let him seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, then recite:
‘Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to immorality.’”

The word "لَمَّة" in this Hadith refers to an inner suggestion or inspiration that enters the heart.

If the thought is of goodness, righteousness, or affirming the truth, then it is from the angel.
But if the thought inclines towards evil, denial of truth, or immorality, then it is from Satan.

✔ Key Points:

Satan whispers sinful suggestions into the hearts of people.
② The angel, by contrast, inspires righteous and truthful thoughts.
③ The believer must learn to distinguish between these two inner whispers.
④ If one experiences evil or doubtful thoughts, one should seek refuge with Allah by reciting:
⑤ The Prophet ﷺ linked this reality to the verse:
Satan threatens with poverty and commands indecency.
Intentions of good are to be accepted with gratitude to Allah, while evil thoughts must be rejected and countered with remembrance and refuge.
