How Many Qira'at (Recitations) of the Qur'an Are There?

Source: Fatawa of the Scholars of Hadith, Volume 09

❖ Question

Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an in seven different Qira'at (recitations)? And if so, why do we only recite it in one Qira'ah?

❖ Answer

All praise is due to Allah! The Qur'an can be recited not only in seven but in ten authentic Qira'at. All these Qira'at are sound, Mutawatir (mass-transmitted), and part of the Qur'an. Whichever Qira'ah one chooses to recite, it remains the Qur'an, and the reward for reciting the Qur'an is attained.

➊ Why Do We Recite Only One Qira'ah?

Even today, the Qur'an is being taught and recited in four major Riwāyāt (narrations):

Riwayah of Qalun
Riwayah of Warsh
Riwayah of Al-Duri
Riwayah of Hafs

In each country, the Qur'an is taught and printed according to a specific Riwayah. The King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur'an has published the Qur'an in all four Riwayat.

➋ Public Unawareness

Unfortunately, there is a general lack of awareness among the public about the science of Qira'at. As a result, some individuals reject the concept of multiple Qira'at, which is a serious matter. One must understand that denial of Qira'at is essentially a denial of the Qur'an itself, and such a person is considered to have left the fold of Islam.

➌ For Further Study

To gain a deeper understanding of the science of Qira'at, the monthly journal “Rashid” has published three special editions dedicated to this subject. These volumes comprehensively explain various issues related to Qira'at:

Ilm al-Qira'at Edition (Part One)
Ilm al-Qira'at Edition (Part Two)
Ilm al-Qira'at Edition (Part Three)

❖ Summary

Denial of Qur'anic Qira'at is equivalent to denying the Qur'an itself.
◈ It is highly recommended to consult experts in the science of Qira'at for detailed guidance.
