Hiring Laborers During War: An Islamic Perspective

Narration:

Translation of the Incident:

Safwan bin Ya‘la narrates that there was a laborer of Ya‘la bin Umayyah. A man bit his arm, and the laborer pulled it away, causing the attacker’s front teeth to fall out. This matter was presented before the Prophet ﷺ. He ﷺ invalidated the claim and said: “Did you intend to bite him like a camel bites?”
[Agreed upon – Bukhari: 2265, Muslim: 1674]

✿ Key Points and Rulings ✿

If a person, in the act of saving himself, harms the oppressor, then the victim is not liable for compensationprovided that he was experiencing severe harm and had no other way of escape.

Biting a human being like a beast reflects an extreme level of savagery and cruelty.

It is permissible to hire someone as a laborer even during war.
