Should shoes be worn while sitting or while standing?
Is there a specific type of shoe for which one must sit while wearing it, and another for which it may be worn while standing?
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد:
In Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Libas, under the chapter Wearing Shoes While Standing, Hadith numbers 3618 and 3619 are recorded:
{عن أبی ہریرۃ قال : نَہٰی رسول اﷲ صلی الله علیہ وسلم أَنْ یَنْتَعِلَ الرَّجُلُ قَائِمًا}
{عن ابن عمر قال : نَهَى النَّبِيُّ صلی الله علیہ وسلم أَنْ يَنْتَعِلَ الرَّجُلُ قَائِمًا}
Translation:
◈ Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited wearing shoes while standing.
◈ Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) also reports that the Prophet ﷺ forbade a man from wearing shoes while standing.
❀ According to this Hadith, wearing shoes while standing is prohibited.
❀ Shoes should be worn while sitting, bending down, or lying down.
❀ The Hadith does not specify any particular type of footwear — meaning, this ruling applies generally to all types of shoes.
✔ This Hadith has been recorded in Sahih Ibn Majah, and
✔ Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah preserve him) also graded it as Sahih in Ta‘liq al-Mishkat.
✔ The renowned Hadith scholar Muhibbullah Shah Rashdi (رحمه الله) also declared this Hadith authentic in his article published in Al-I‘tisam.
هٰذَا مَا عِندِي وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ
