❀ Question​


Should shoes be worn while sitting or while standing?
Is there a specific type of shoe for which one must sit while wearing it, and another for which it may be worn while standing?


✔ Response​


الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد:


In Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Libas, under the chapter Wearing Shoes While Standing, Hadith numbers 3618 and 3619 are recorded:


{عن أبی ہریرۃ قال : نَہٰی رسول اﷲ صلی الله علیہ وسلم أَنْ یَنْتَعِلَ الرَّجُلُ قَائِمًا}
{عن ابن عمر قال : نَهَى النَّبِيُّ صلی الله علیہ وسلم أَنْ يَنْتَعِلَ الرَّجُلُ قَائِمًا}


Translation:



Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited wearing shoes while standing.
Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) also reports that the Prophet ﷺ forbade a man from wearing shoes while standing.


✿ Explanation​


❀ According to this Hadith, wearing shoes while standing is prohibited.
❀ Shoes should be worn while sitting, bending down, or lying down.
❀ The Hadith does not specify any particular type of footwear — meaning, this ruling applies generally to all types of shoes.


✿ Authentication by Hadith Scholars​


✔ This Hadith has been recorded in Sahih Ibn Majah, and
Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah preserve him) also graded it as Sahih in Ta‘liq al-Mishkat.
✔ The renowned Hadith scholar Muhibbullah Shah Rashdi (رحمه الله) also declared this Hadith authentic in his article published in Al-I‘tisam.


هٰذَا مَا عِندِي وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ
This is what I know; and Allah knows best what is correct.
