❖ Hadith on the Prohibition of Sacrifice at Places of Pagan Rituals ❖
Is there any Hadith that prohibits slaughtering a sacrificial animal at a place where pre-Islamic pagan rituals used to occur? If so, please provide its reference.
Faḍīlat al-Bāḥith Afzal Zaheer Jamali ḥafiẓahullāh
A man during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a vow that he would slaughter camels at a place called Buwānah. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of his vow.
The Prophet ﷺ asked:
❝Was there an idol from the idols of Jāhiliyyah that was worshipped there?❞
The people replied: No.
Then he ﷺ asked:
❝Was any festival from the festivals of the disbelievers celebrated there?❞
They said: No.
So the Prophet ﷺ said:
❝Fulfil your vow. However, it is not permissible to fulfil a vow that involves sin or that is beyond a person’s ownership.❞
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 3313]
◈ It is impermissible to perform sacrifices or acts of worship at places associated with pre-Islamic pagan rituals or disbelievers' festivals.
◈ A Sharʿī vow is only valid when it involves obedience to Allah and is in line with His commandments.
Fulfilling a vow that involves sin or occurs at a non-Sharʿī location is not allowed.
