From Mawdudi's Thought to Khomeinism: Jamaat-e-Islami and Shiaism

This excerpt is taken from the book compiled by Hakim Ajmal Khan Sahib "Recognize Jamaat-e-Islami" .

Jamaat-e-Islami, Shiaism, and Khomeinism

We have already clarified in our previous article that Maulana Maududi's religious interpretations are completely different from those of the pious predecessors (Salaf-e-Saliheen). Especially regarding Shi'ism, his opinion is misleading, which he probably adopted due to Pakistan's specific political environment and to gain Shia votes. Although his book "Khilafat o Mulukiyat" is full of historical references, the conclusions drawn after the discussion show that Maulana highlighted the mistakes of the Companions (Sahaba) and encouraged the Shia historical-political background. He labeled the predecessors as wrong, lacking insight, and unwise.

Since Maulana Maududi's way of thinking about Rafd and Shi'ism has influenced the entire Jamaat-e-Islami, most members of the Jamaat hold a soft corner in their hearts for the Shia for political purposes. Some call it a minor difference, some equate Shia and Sunni as the same, and some do not consider it wrong to violate fundamental Islamic beliefs for the sake of national unity. Since the eruption of Khomeinism, the members and leaders of the Jamaat have been walking shoulder to shoulder with Khomeini and his Pasdaran. They call the Iranian revolution an Islamic revolution, justify Iran in the Iran-Iraq war, and applaud Khomeini's sedition in the Holy Shrine. They are waiting to bring Khomeini's so-called Islamic Republic (in which the Khomeini dictator caused the death of millions) to Saudi Arabia.

The Shi'ism that was alive merely on the basis of Taqiyya (hypocrisy) was given the color of aggressive Shi'ism by Khomeini in the name of Wilayat al-Faqih. After the end of the Iranian monarchy, he passed away dreaming of political dominance over the entire Muslim world, especially the two Holy Sanctuaries (Haramain Sharifain).

There is no place for Shi'ism in Islam:

Since Shi'i beliefs negate the fundamental beliefs of Islam and have no connection with divine revelation and the religion of Muhammad, there is no place for Shi'ism in Islam. The scholars of the Ummah have long exposed the misguidance, apostasy, and disbelief of this sect.

The Iranian Kalima:

Currently, the Iranian Kalima, which is a creation of the Khomeini era, is as follows.
[لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله علی ولی الله خمینی حجة الله]
Reference: Monthly Wahdat Islami Tehran Yearbook 1984

This same Kalima is recorded in the Pakistani government's Shi'a religious education syllabus for grades nine and ten in this manner.

The Kalima of Pakistani Shi'as:

[لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله علی ولی الله وصی الله رسول الله وخليفه بلا فصل]
Then, as many sects as there are, each has its separate Imam, and each one adds the name of their Imam at the end of the Kalima.

The Kalima of the Ismaili sect:

[أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمد رسول الله وأشهد أن علی الله]
Reference: Az Takbeer Weekly Karachi

It should be noted that there are several dozen sects, Imams, and Kalimas among the Shi'as. In fact, a large number of the 73 sects are comprised of Shi'as.

The Quran of Iran:

The Iranian Institute of Printing and Advertisements, Jaavidan Iran, published the Holy Quran. Somehow, it reached Pakistan. Some Muslims protested to the Government of Pakistan against its publication. Consequently, after investigation, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Pakistan imposed a ban on this Quran.
Reference: (Roznama Jang Lahore 26/October 1986)

The Iranian Kalima monogram and the distorted image of the Holy Quran are co-publishers.

Iranian Constitution:

According to Article 12 of the Constitution of the Government of Iran, the official religion of Iran is Jafari Ithna Ashari Islam.

Ithna Ashari Beliefs:

The principles of faith of the Ithna Ashari Rawafid are as follows:
Tawheed (Oneness of God), Nubuwwat (Prophethood), Imamat (Leadership), Adl (Justice), Ma'ad (Resurrection).
Although the Shia beliefs include both Tawheed and Nubuwwat, the belief in Imamat has severed the roots of both Tawheed and Nubuwwat.

[1] Belief in Imamat:

The belief in Imamate is the core spirit of Shia beliefs. According to this belief, the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was commanded to appoint Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor (Wasi). Accordingly, he appointed Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as his Wasi. Then, since the world cannot exist without a Wasi, Sayyidina Ali’s successors were appointed as Sayyidina Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and his deputy Sayyidina Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). Thus, twelve Imams were appointed. The twelfth Imam, Hasan al-Askari, disappeared from the world at a young age and will emerge as the awaited Mahdi. He will bring the true Quran. (العیاذ باللہ)
According to this belief, the followers of the Rawafid consider their Imams to be appointed by God. They regard them as infallible. They receive revelation, and their commands are Shariah. Imam Khomeini writes in "Al-Hukumat al-Islamiyyah":
Among the essential and fundamental beliefs of our religion (Twelver Shia) is the belief that our infallible Imams hold a status and rank that no close angel or sent prophet can reach.
Reference: (Al-Hukumat al-Islamiyyah Tehran p. 54)

[2] Our Master Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and other Companions are apostates!

To prove the theory of Imamate true and to establish Our Master Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as the successor of Allah and the friend of Allah, it is necessary to declare Our Master Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) and other Companions as disbelievers, apostates, usurpers, and traitors. Because (may Allah forbid) the caliphate of Our Master Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the successor of Allah and friend of Allah, was usurped by these Companions. In fact, Shi'ism begins with this belief. If any Shia sect does not hold this belief and does not curse and insult the two Sheikhs, then it cannot be called Shia. This belief is written in all their major books, Al-Jami' al-Kafi, Jala' al-Uyun, Kashf al-Asrar Khomeini, etc.
[فلعمري لقد نافقا قبل ذالك وردا على الله جل ذكره وكلامه وهزيا برسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وهما الكافران عليهما لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين]
Translation! I swear that both of them (Abu Bakr and Umar) were hypocrites from the beginning. They mocked the words of Allah; both of them are absolute disbelievers. Upon them is the curse of Allah, His angels, and all mankind.
Reference: Kitab al-Rawdha al-Jami' al-Kafi, Lucknow edition, p. 92

[3] Distortion of the Quran:

The third belief is the distortion of the Quran, which arises automatically in the presence of previous beliefs. According to this belief, the current Quran is the distorted version compiled by Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). The original Quran is with the Imams, which contains forty parts. When the last Imam, the Hidden Mahdi, returns to this world, he will bring it with him.
To prove this belief, the Ahl al-Shia have fabricated many verses mentioning that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is the successor and guardian, which the Companions of the Prophet removed.
It is narrated from Hisham bin Salim that Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said that the Quran which Jibreel brought down to Muhammad (peace be upon him) contained seventeen thousand verses.
Reference: (Usul al-Kafi 671)

In the Holy Quran,
Reference: Surah An-Nisa, verse 170
is as follows:

❀ In Usul al-Kafi, Imam Baqir comments on this verse, stating that it was originally revealed in this manner.

Reference: (Usul al-Kafi 268)

Imamate, the leadership of the two Sheikhs and the noble companions, and the distortion of the Quran—without these three fundamental beliefs, the walls of Shi'ism cannot be established. With minor differences, this is the belief of every Shi'a sect in the world.

The pillars of Islam are mere actions:

For the Shia, prayer, zakat, fasting, and Hajj are only considered acts of worship, which they regard as obligatory. They are not considered compulsory.
Reference: (Asal Usool Al-Shia Kashif Al-Ghita)

Mut'ah, Taqiyya, concealment, Bada, etc., are also very well-known beliefs, the details of which are not appropriate to discuss at this time. Many scholars have shed light on them; however, among the beliefs revived by Imam Khomeini, the concept of Wilayat al-Faqih, i.e., the forced establishment of Shia governance, is particularly significant. The aggressive aspect that Khomeini adopted is based on this belief. The propaganda of Shiaism worldwide and the insistence on calling the Iranian revolution Islamic were for this reason, and for this reason, demonstrations are held during Hajj in Makkah, involving Iranian soldiers and pilgrims, to drum up support for Imam Khomeini's Wilayah. The late Imam wanted to be recognized as the sole Imam in the world according to Wilayat al-Faqih. He wanted to seize control and dominance over the Two Holy Mosques but failed and left this world without declaring himself the Mahdi. Here is a reflection of his book Kashif al-Asrar along with its Urdu translation.

Imam Khomeini's Will:

Before his passing, Imam Khomeini wrote a will consisting of thirty-two (32) pages for his followers. The parts of this will that are against the Ahl al-Islam, i.e., Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, have not been shown as taqiyya. However, some of its clauses have been published in Shia newspapers. Some of these are as follows.
[If, hypothetically, the Quran explicitly mentioned the appointment of Sayyidina Ali for Imamate and Caliphate after the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, even then these people would not have abandoned their purpose and plan because of these Quranic verses and divine commands. For this purpose, they had attached themselves to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. They would do whatever tricks and deceptions were necessary for this purpose and paid no heed to the divine command. Acting against Quranic injunctions and divine commands was a trivial matter for them; they opposed many Quranic injunctions and paid no heed to divine commands.]
If they considered it necessary to remove these verses from the Quran (in which the appointment of Sayyidina Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, to the position of Imamate was mentioned) to achieve their goal (government and power), they would have removed those verses from the Quran. This was a trivial matter for them.
❀ Translation: There is a fiery well in Hell from which the inhabitants of Hell seek refuge from its heat, and in this well is a fiery chest in which twelve men are imprisoned. Six are from previous nations and six from this nation. The six from previous

Nations are these six:

[1] Qabil, [2] Nimrod, [3] Pharaoh, [4] The killer of the she-camel of Sayyidina Salih, peace be upon him, [5-6] Two from Bani Israel.

And from this nation, these six are:

(نعوذ باللہ) [1] Abu Bakr, [2] Umar, [3] Uthman, [4] Muawiyah, [5] Nahrawan, [6] Ibn Muljam.

Indication and Emphasis on Acting Upon Hadith al-Thaqalayn:

That is, the hadith in which the Prophet of Islam advised to remain connected to both the Quran and Ahl al-Bayt until the Day of Judgment?
It should be noted that the Shia interpret the hadith [تركت فيكم أمرين لن تضلوا ما تمسكتم بهما كتاب الله وسنتي] as referring to Ahl al-Bayt instead of the Sunnah.
While mentioning the Hadith of Thaqalayn, the era of Mawla Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is also mentioned, where deviation from the religion led the Ummah to destruction. There is a strong attack on the Kharijites and deceivers of the public, and they are described as the greatest enemies of Islam.
(Without naming, Imam Khomeini is implied to be like Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them), who are deceivers of the public and deviators from the religion.)
Emphasis on relying on the Quran and mention of the long history of oppression of the Quran and Islam (oppression here means distortion of the Quran).
Special emphasis on attending Friday prayers and the mourning of Sayyid al-Shuhada Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him).
Severe criticism of the Al Saud government and condemnation of them.
Reference: Quoted from Majmua Akhbar Sidqaat Pune 2/ 9 July 1989

It should be noted that the excerpts of Khomeini’s will published in the Iranian Embassy in Delhi’s
Reference: Risalah Rah-e-Islam July 1989
are different from this; those generally relate to the issues of Muslims and the Islamic world. Here too, taqiyya and concealment have been employed because Risalah Rah-e-Islam is also studied by Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama’ah.
In Khomeini’s will, in fact, the beliefs of Imamat, the two caliphs (Sabiqain), and the distortion of the Quran are all mentioned. The deceased emphasized only attending Friday prayers and mourning instead of practicing the pillars of Islam. These are sufficient acts for Shia Islam.
If the belief in Imamat is accepted as correct, then where does the Islamic belief in the finality of prophethood stand? Then what is wrong with Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani’s claim of being the Mahdi or the Promised Messiah? If the two caliphs are disbelievers, apostates, and usurpers,
then where is Islam, since the Ummah received Islam through the Rightly Guided Caliphs? If the Holy Quran has been oppressed in the past, then necessarily it has been distorted. In the case of distortion, what guarantee is there of its truthfulness? These beliefs, ideas, and narrations that uproot Islam. The connection, friendship, and relation of Ahl al-Shia with Imam Khomeini and Khomeinism is a sign that the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami and the religious beliefs of Jamaat-e-Islami are not correct.
Maulana Maududi’s conciliatory opinion about Shia and the praise of the Iranian Shia revolution have already provided proof of this connection.
Then when Iranian soldiers and pilgrims caused sedition during Hajj based on Imam Khomeini’s opinion, the entire Islamic world expressed sorrow over it and declared it a Shia sedition of Khomeini. But the attitude of the workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and its newspapers was regrettable. Observe the opinions of Jamaat-e-Islami’s newspapers and then their contradictions.

Do not destroy the sanctity and peace of the Two Holy Mosques:

"But Iranian pilgrims, it is not known why they consider themselves exempt, create some kind of disturbance every year. Therefore, we sincerely request the Iranian leaders that in the enthusiasm of exporting the revolution, the reins of moderation should not be let go. On the other hand, the Saudi government should also not be negligent from this aspect. Those who participated in this disturbance were also the human power of the Islamic world. May Allah bless them with His mercy. It is true that maintaining peace in the Two Holy Mosques is their responsibility, but if in this regard the use of force becomes necessary to fulfill their responsibility, it should not be used indiscriminately."
Reference: (Seh Roza Dawat 7/August 1987)

The editor of Dawat is such a straightforward man that he does not even know why Iranian pilgrims demonstrate every year? Then the suggestion of the editor is worth considering that the reins of moderation should not be let go. That is, the Shia revolution should definitely take place but with moderation!
The last advice is very good that do not use force! Because Jamaat-e-Islami people establish peace everywhere with their wisdom.
Now see the editorial of the official Hindi organ of the same Jamaat, Kanti.
"Eid-ul-Adha is actually part of the great festival known as Hajj. Like other countries of the world, Iranians also came there. Their procession took place, some slogans were raised. And using the slogans as an excuse, the Saudi government fired at them. It is said that before firing, they did not even take the precaution that every country takes before firing on its citizens. Then why did all this happen? The direct responsibility for this should be borne by the Saudi government. It should prove that the sedition was a conspiracy. That is why it was done. If it does not prove it, history will call it a criminal.
The one who never waged jihad against Israel has now declared jihad against Iran. The Saudi government's fight with Iran is based on the fear that an Islamic revolution might also come to Saudi Arabia like Iran. Call it the mistake of the Iranians or their duty that they talk about the Islamic system even on the occasion of Hajj. The Saudi government does not like this."

Jamaat-e-Islami's taqiyya on the open sedition of Iranian Shias in Makkah Mukarramah and the Shia-supporting statements of its newspapers indicate that these people consider religion merely a political concept like the Shias. Belief has no importance for them; the group which the scholars for 1400 years have considered misguided, apostate, and infidel, Jamaat-e-Islami has been praising. Not only that, members, office bearers, newspapers, and institutions of Jamaat-e-Islami continuously publish such books and literature that fully support and sympathize with the Iranian Shia revolution and Khomeinism. Their newspapers and books try to create the impression under the pretext of inviting Muslim unity that there is no difference between Sunni and Shia beliefs, and those who clarify this difference are lying. SIM's newspaper "Afkar-e-Milli" and books consistently propagate Khomeinism.
❀ A member of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mr. Wasi Iqbal, whose articles often appear in Jamaat-e-Islami newspapers and magazines, has published a book titled "The Problem of Islam: Sunni and Shia Two Sides of the Same Coin" from Maktaba Islami Dauram Pur. Since this gentleman is employed in a government department in operations and his job is to promote usury under the name of mutual aid, what objection could he have to friendship with Shia? In his book, he has made a reprehensible attempt to prove that Shia beliefs such as Imamat, distortion of the Quran, Mut'ah, Taqiyya, Bada' and others are all correct and that these are also present among Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama'ah. For example, after discussing Imamat, it is written:
"We may not accept it for any reason, but the Shia have a strong argument for their sect."
Reference: (Islam ka Mas'ala p.53)

Mirza Qadiani also gives proof of being the Mahdi.
At the end of the discussion, it is written:
"In short, all the talks about distortion of the Quran are false and fabricated, and it is not right to believe both sides."
Reference: p.66

The Shia book Usul al-Kafi has confirmed distortion. Regarding what opinion you hold, in the discussion of criticism, it is written:
"My feeling is also the same... that Taqiyya is not an illegitimate thing. Yes, it can be said that when the Shia have made Taqiyya their faith, then how can we Ahl al-Sunnah accept it?"
Reference: p.76

Hypocrisy is already permissible among Jamaat-e-Islami people.

There are statements regarding Bada (the alteration of divine decree).

All Muslims (Shia and Sunni) agree that God remains actively involved in the affairs of creation. From time to time, He issues new rulings appropriate to the circumstances of the time, and this is what the Shia call Bada.
Reference: (The Issue of Islam)

What is the difference between Muslims saying Allah Allah and Brahmin saying Ram Ram?
Therefore, adopting an extremist attitude on the issue of Mut'ah is against the dignity of religious scholars.
Reference: (The Issue of Islam)

Advising the elders of the nation, it is written:
"Our wise elders do not know that in the atmosphere where these issues are raised, Islam itself is questioned. Simple-minded elders do not understand that today, effective weapons against any religion and its constitution are not insults and mental logical arguments. Rather, in the course of history of the followers of this world, along with civilizational and cultural phenomena, the most effective weapons, whether supportive or opposing, have proven to be so."
❀ There is no reference as to where Iqbal Sahib has quoted this entire paragraph from. Moreover, it is incoherent at the end. It might be the writing of Maududi Sahib, or some other writer from Jamaat-e-Islami! Jamaat-e-Islami considers the scholars of the Ummah to be simple-minded. Because for 1400 years, no one understood religion, except Maududi Sahib! Who has paved the way for unity with Shia. And the earlier and later respected scholars like Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Abu Dawood, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Nasa'i, Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, Allama Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Hammam, Imam Ibn Hazm, Qazi Iyaz Maliki, Allama Bahr al-Uloom Lakhnawi, Mulla Ali Qari Fatawa Alamgiri, Hazrat Shah Waliullah, Hazrat Shah Abdul Aziz, Maulana Abdul Hai Lakhnawi, Anjum Maulana Mahmood Hasan, Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri, Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, Maulana Riazuddin, Maulana Asghar Hussain, Maulana Izzaz Ali (may Allah have mercy on them) and all the contemporary scholars are considered simple-minded by Jamaat-e-Islami. Because the scholars have declared the Shia as misguided and apostates.
Jamaat-e-Islami, for political purposes, disregards the principles of religion and beliefs and gives more priority to Muslim unity. This is generally what all politicians do. Because to run politics, a righteous society is not necessary, only a large number of individuals is enough. Maududi Sahib himself ran Jamaat-e-Islami as a political organization and was averse to religious education and training. He wanted to unite Muslims under the slogan of Divine Government, which Gandhi Ji also called (Ram Rajya), and establish a Muslim government, which is impossible until the Day of Judgment because a person who deviates from the beliefs and principles of Islam cannot establish an Islamic government.
Jamaat-e-Islami members used to avoid government jobs and democratic elections by saying that this system is equivalent to cooperating with the Jahili system, but now they are at the forefront in jobs and elections. Support, whether from Shia, Qadiani, Baha'i, Ismaili, Barelvi, or anyone else, is considered legitimate.

The magazine Al-Hasanat is also salaried:

Maulana Abdul Haq Sahib was a very poor, noble, and pious person who had joined Jamaat-e-Islami. He published a small magazine named "Al-Hasanat." He wrote very well on religious rulings and issues. The magazine and the publishing house progressed a lot and left behind a considerable legacy for the followers. However, as the influx of Iranian Shia capital has influenced the workers and members of Jamaat-e-Islami in recent days, why should the people of "Al-Hasanat" lag behind in this race? The editor of this magazine, Murtaza Saahil Sahib, wrote a foreword on Wasi Iqbal's book "Shia and Sunni: Two Sides of the Same Coin" and praised Wasi Iqbal's achievement. Following that, Wasi Iqbal's article "Common Issues in Shia and Sunni Jurisprudence" was published in two editions of "Al-Hasanat" Rampur. In this article, God forbid, an attempt was made to give the impression that Shia and Sunni issues regarding prayer and fasting are almost the same. The regret over this anti-Islam stance of Al-Hasanat cannot be expressed enough; this is purely a matter of ignorance and causes pain to the soul of Maulana Abdul Haq, may Allah have mercy on him. Alas! What a bad time has come upon Islam. Ignorant people have started to interpret and explain Islamic Shariah arbitrarily. In the terminology of the Ahl-e-Khalsa, such individuals and institutions are called "Tanqawiya." According to Islamic belief, prayer is part of the pillars of Islam, whereas among the Shia it is considered merely an act of practice. Its obligation is even doubtful. Accordingly, Imam Khomeini, in his will, advised the Shia only to attend Friday prayers and mourning gatherings. When there is a difference even in the pillars of Islam, then publishing issues on Shia prayer, call to prayer, iqamah, fasting, etc., to convince Muslims that there is similarity in Shia and Sunni issues of prayer and fasting is clear misguidance and leads the general Muslim public into ignorance. A person who diminishes the importance of belief and practice in the fundamental tenets of Islam and calls any false self-invented practice Islam is himself a misguided disbeliever and destined for Hell.

The deception of similarity in Shia and Sunni rulings and issues is exactly like someone saying that Hindus also remember God by the names Bhagwan, Ishwar, and Prabhu. They have temples instead of mosques. Instead of the call to prayer, they ring bells. Instead of prayer, they sing hymns. Then they argue that in this case, there is no difference between Islam and Vedic Dharma because they also call upon God in some way. (نعوذ باللہ)

The people of Jamaat-e-Islami should know that without the correctness of the fundamental beliefs of Islam, all actions are invalid. Every person who declares himself a Muslim must have faith in the fundamental beliefs and pillars of Islam and act upon them with faith.

Only such a person deserves to be called a Muslim. The purpose of Islam is not to gather a flock or majority of any particular group, nor is its purpose governance. Its purpose is to establish an Islamic society based on the reform of belief and faith. Those who describe the purpose of Islam as governance and politics are influenced by Shia thought because Shia itself is a political ideology that is a Jewish conspiracy to create discord among the people of Islam.
