Forty Authentic Qudsi Hadiths on Allah’s Commands

Forty Authentic Qudsi Hadiths Based on the Commands of Allah

✍ Authored by: Abu Hamza Abdul Khaliq Siddiqi

The Greatness of Tawhid

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“(They do these deeds) so that Allah may reward them with the best of what they used to do and give them even more out of His bounty, and Allah provides to whom He wills without measure.”

Ḥadīth ①

Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Dhikr wa al-Du‘ā’, Bāb Faḍl al-Dhikr wa al-Du‘ā’, Hadith no. 2687

“Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says: Whoever performs a good deed, he will receive ten times its reward, and (for some) I will grant even more than that. And whoever commits an evil deed, its recompense will be equal to it (not more) — or I may forgive it. And whoever comes closer to Me by a span, I come closer to him by a cubit. Whoever comes closer to Me by a cubit, I come closer to him by an arm’s length. Whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running. And whoever meets Me with sins filling the earth but without associating anything with Me (being from the people of Tawhid), I will meet him with forgiveness of equal measure.”

Avoiding Shirk is Essential

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that for whomsoever He wills. And whoever associates partners with Allah has certainly fabricated a great sin.”

Ḥadīth ②

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Riqāq, Bāb Sifat al-Jannah wa al-Nār, Hadith no. 6557
Sahih Muslim, Kitab Sifat al-Munāfiqīn, Bāb Talab al-Kāfir al-Fidā’ bi-Mil’ al-Arḍi Dhahaban, Hadith no. 2805

“And Anas ibn Mālik (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: On the Day of Judgment, Allah will say to the person who will have the lightest punishment among the inhabitants of Hell: If you possessed all that is on the earth, would you offer it as ransom to save yourself from this punishment? He will reply: Yes. Allah will say: I had asked you for something much less than this while you were still in the loins of Adam — that you should not associate anything with Me — but you insisted on committing shirk.”

The Condemnation of Showing Off (Riyā’)

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Those who are neglectful of their prayer. Those who show off.”

Ḥadīth ③

Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Zuhd, Bāb Taḥrīm al-Riyā’, Hadith no. 2985

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: I am the One most free of need from any partnership. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates someone else with Me, I abandon him and his act of association.”

Ḥadīth ④

Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Imārah, Bāb Man Qātala li’l-Riyā’ wa’l-Sum‘ah Istaḥaqqa al-Nār, Hadith no. 1905

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The first people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be:
— A man who was martyred. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favors and he will acknowledge them. Allah will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I fought for Your sake until I was martyred. Allah will say: You have lied; rather you fought so that it would be said, ‘He is brave,’ and it has been said. Then it will be commanded that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.
— A man who learned knowledge, taught it, and recited the Qur’an. He will be brought, the favors will be made known to him and he will acknowledge them. Allah will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I learned knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Qur’an for Your sake. Allah will say: You have lied; you learned knowledge so that it would be said, ‘He is learned,’ and you recited the Qur’an so that it would be said, ‘He is a reciter,’ and it has been said. Then he will be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.
— A man to whom Allah had given plenty and all kinds of wealth. He will be brought, the favors will be made known to him and he will acknowledge them. Allah will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I did not leave any path in which You love spending except that I spent in it for Your sake. Allah will say: You have lied; you did so in order that it be said, ‘He is generous,’ and it has been said. Then he will be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire.”

The Vastness of Allah’s Mercy

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Then as for those who have believed in Allah and held fast to Him, He will surely admit them into mercy from Himself and bounty, and will guide them to Himself on a straight path.”

Ḥadīth ⑤

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb Bad’ al-Khalq, Bāb Mā Jā’a fī Qawli’Llāh, Hadith no. 3194
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Tawbah, Bāb fī Sa‘at Raḥmatillāh Ta‘ālā…, Hadith no. 2751

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says: My mercy has outstripped My wrath.”

Intending a Good Deed is Itself a Good Deed

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times the like of it, and whoever brings an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like of it; and they will not be wronged.”

Ḥadīth ⑥

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, Bāb Qawli’Llāhi Ta‘ālā: (Yurīdūna an Yubaddilū Kalam Allāh), Hadith no. 7501
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb Idhā Hamma al-‘Abdu bi-Ḥasanah…, Hadith no. 128

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah says (to the angels): When My servant intends to commit an evil deed, do not record it against him until he does it. If he does it, then write it as one evil deed; but if he refrains from it for My sake, then write it for him as one good deed. And when he intends to do a good deed but does not do it, write it for him as one good deed; and if he does it, then write it for him from tenfold up to seven hundredfold.”

Allah’s Nearness to the Servant

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And We have certainly created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.”

Ḥadīth ⑦

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, Bāb Qawl Allāh Ta‘ālā: Yuridūna an Yubaddilū Kalām Allāh, Hadith no. 7405
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Dhikr wa’l-Du‘ā’, Bāb al-Ḥathth ‘alā Dhikr Allāh, Hadith no. 2675

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than them. If he comes near to Me by a span, I come near to him by a cubit. If he comes near to Me by a cubit, I come near to him by an arm’s length. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.”

Allah’s Protection for His Pious Servants

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Unquestionably, for the friends (awliyā’) of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

Ḥadīth ⑧

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Riqāq, Bāb al-Tawāḍu‘, Hadith no. 6502

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says: Whoever shows enmity to a friend (wali) of Mine, I have declared war upon him. My servant does not draw closer to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the obligations I have enjoined upon him. And My servant continues to draw closer to Me through voluntary deeds until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks Me, I will surely give him; and if he seeks My protection, I will surely protect him. And I never hesitate about anything I am to do as I hesitate about seizing the soul of My believing servant — he dislikes death, and I dislike to displease him.”

Repentance for Sins

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.”

Ḥadīth ⑨

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, Bāb Qawl Allāh Ta‘ālā: Yurīdūna an Yubaddilū Kalām Allāh, Hadith no. 7507
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Tawbah, Bāb Ḥathth ‘alā al-Tawbah, Hadith no. 2758

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says: My servant committed a sin and said: O Allah, forgive me my sin. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: My servant has committed a sin and he knows that he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes account for them; I have forgiven My servant. Then he again committed a sin and said: O my Lord, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes account for them; I have forgiven My servant. Then he committed a sin again and said: O my Lord, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes account for them; I have forgiven My servant. Then he committed a sin again and said: O my Lord, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and takes account for them; I have forgiven My servant. Let him do as he wishes.”

Allah’s Mercy Exceeds the Sins of His Servants

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Ḥadīth ⑩

Al-Tirmidhi, Kitāb al-Da‘awāt, Bāb mā Jā’a fī al-Du‘ā’ wa’l-Tawbah, Hadith no. 3540 (Ḥasan Ḥadīth)

“And Anas ibn Mālik (RA) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Allah Almighty says: O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I will forgive you despite what is within you, and I do not mind. O son of Adam, if your sins were to reach up to the clouds of the sky, and then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, if you came to Me with sins as great as the earth but met Me without associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness just as great.”

The Excellence of Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me, and do not deny Me.”

Ḥadīth ⑪

Sahih Ibn Mājah, Kitāb al-Adab, Bāb Faḍl al-Dhikr, Hadith no. 3792

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah says: I am with My servant as long as he remembers Me and his lips move with My remembrance.”

Ḥadīth ⑫

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Riqāq, Bāb Man Naṣaba li’l-Dunyā Shabakah, Hadith no. 6491
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb Idhā Hamma bi-Ḥasanah, Hadith no. 131

“And Ibn ‘Abbās (RA) reported from the Prophet ﷺ — relating from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted — that Allah has written down good deeds and evil deeds, then He explained it: Whoever intends to perform a good deed but does not do it, Allah records it as one complete good deed. If he intends it and then does it, Allah records it as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times, or even more. If he intends to commit an evil deed but does not do it, Allah records it as one complete good deed. If he intends it and then does it, Allah records it as only one evil deed.”

Allah’s Generosity

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“But Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.”

Ḥadīth ⑬

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tafsīr, Bāb: Wa Mā Anfaqtum min Shay’in Fa-Huwa Yukhlifuh, Hadith no. 4684
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Zakāh, Bāb al-Ḥathth ‘alā al-Naḥl, Hadith no. 993

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Allah says: Spend, O son of Adam, and I will spend upon you.”

Ḥadīth ⑭

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, Bāb Qawl Allāh: Yuridūna an Yubaddilū Kalām Allāh, Hadith no. 7410
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Zakāh, Bāb al-Ḥathth ‘alā al-Naḥl, Hadith no. 993

“And Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported from the Prophet ﷺ that Allah said to me: Spend and I will spend on you. And he said: The Hand of Allah is full and never decreases due to spending; it is unceasing, night and day. Have you not seen what Allah has spent since He created the heavens and the earth, and it has not decreased what is in His Hand? And His Throne was upon the water, and in His Hand is the balance, He raises and lowers (whomever He wills).”

Allah is Free of Need

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“If you disbelieve — indeed, Allah is free of need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. But if you are grateful, He approves it for you.”

Ḥadīth ⑮

Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Birr wa’l-Ṣilah, Bāb al-Taḥrīm al-Ẓulm, Hadith no. 2577

“And Abu Dharr (RA) reported from the Prophet ﷺ — from his Lord, the Almighty — that He said: O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except those I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I will guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those I have fed, so ask Me for food and I will feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those I have clothed, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. O My servants, you commit sins by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I will forgive you. O My servants, you will never be able to harm Me to harm Me, nor will you ever be able to benefit Me to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, mankind and jinn, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any one of you, that would not increase My Kingdom in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, mankind and jinn, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one of you, that would not decrease My Kingdom in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, mankind and jinn, were to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, except like what a needle decreases if put into the sea. O My servants, it is only your deeds that I account for you and then recompense you accordingly. So whoever finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.”

Allah’s Love for Repentance

❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Indeed, Allah loves those who repent often and He loves those who purify themselves.”

Ḥadīth ⑯

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Da‘awāt, Bāb al-Tawbah, Hadith no. 6309
Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Tawbah, Bāb fī Ḥathth ‘alā al-Tawbah, Hadith no. 2747

“And Anas ibn Mālik (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you would be if he lost his riding camel in a barren desert and then suddenly found it.”

Allah’s Acceptance of Good Deeds

So he will return and say: O my Lord, I found it full. Allah will say to him: Go and enter Paradise. He will go, and it will appear to him that it is full. He will return and say: O my Lord, I found it full. Allah will say: Go and enter Paradise, for you will have the equivalent of the world and ten times like it. Or, you will have the like of ten worlds. The man will say: Are You mocking me while You are the King? Allah says: “I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself. If he remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in a better assembly. If he comes near to Me by a span, I come near to him by a cubit. If he comes near to Me by a cubit, I come near to him by an arm’s length. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.”

Allah’s Care for His Servant’s Repentance

Ḥadīth 34

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Allah says: “A servant committed a sin and said: O Allah, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin, but he knows he has a Lord who forgives sin and takes account for sin; I have forgiven My servant. Then he returned and committed a sin, and said: O Lord, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin, but he knows he has a Lord who forgives sin and takes account for sin; I have forgiven My servant. Then he returned and committed a sin, and said: O Lord, forgive me my sin. Allah says: My servant has committed a sin, but he knows he has a Lord who forgives sin and takes account for sin; I have forgiven My servant. Let him do what he wishes (so long as he keeps repenting, I will forgive him).”

Allah’s Promise of Forgiveness for Hopeful Servants

Ḥadīth 35

Narrated Anas ibn Mālik (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Allah Almighty said: “O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I will forgive you despite what you have done, and I do not mind. O son of Adam, if your sins were to reach up to the clouds of the sky, and then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, if you came to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth but met Me without associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness just as great.”

Allah Does Not Burden a Soul Beyond Its Capacity

Ḥadīth 36

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (RA): When the verse was revealed:

“To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills. And Allah is over all things competent.” (Qur’an 2:284)

The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ found it hard and came to the Messenger ﷺ, kneeling down, and said: “O Messenger of Allah! We have been charged with deeds which we can manage — prayer, fasting, jihad, and charity. But now this verse has been revealed and we cannot bear it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you want to say as the people of the two Books said before you: ‘We hear and we disobey’? Rather say: ‘We hear and we obey; (grant us) Your forgiveness, our Lord; to You is the return.’” So they said this.

When the people recited it and their tongues submitted, Allah revealed afterward:

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers...” (Qur’an 2:285)

And when they did this, Allah abrogated it and revealed:

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity...” (Qur’an 2:286).

The Virtue of the Day of ʿArafah

Ḥadīth 37

Narrated ʿĀ’ishah (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more of His servants from the Fire than the Day of ʿArafah. He draws near, then He boasts about them to the angels and says: What do these (servants) want?”

Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Hadith no. 1348

The Virtue of ʿUmrah

Ḥadīth 38

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“From one ʿUmrah to another is an expiation for whatever is between them, and Hajj al-Mabrūr (an accepted Hajj) brings no reward less than Paradise.”

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Hadith no. 1773; Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Hadith no. 1349

The Greatness of Allah

Ḥadīth 39

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (RA): The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah, the Exalted, says: ‘The son of Adam abuses Me by reviling Time, while I am Time. In My Hand are the night and the day.’”

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Tafsīr, Hadith no. 4826; Sahih Muslim, Kitāb al-Alfāẓ, Hadith no. 2246

Allah’s Mercy Towards the Sinners

Ḥadīth 40

Narrated Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will say to the people of Paradise: ‘O people of Paradise!’ They will reply: ‘Here we are, our Lord, at Your service, all goodness is in Your Hand.’ He will say: ‘Are you pleased?’ They will say: ‘Why should we not be pleased, O Lord, when You have given us what You have not given to anyone of Your creation?’ He will say: ‘Shall I not give you something better than that?’ They will say: ‘O Lord, what could be better than that?’ He will say: ‘I bestow upon you My Pleasure, and I shall never be angry with you after this.’”
