Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomever He sends astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. To proceed:
Allah the Exalted said: “And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves spouses that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect.” (Ar-Rum: 21)
It is narrated from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Nikah (marriage) is my Sunnah, so whoever does not act upon my Sunnah has no connection with me.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And indeed We sent messengers before you and made for them wives and offspring.” (Ar-Ra'd: 38)
Sa'id ibn Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, “Have you married?” I replied, “No.” He said, “Then marry, for indeed the best of this Ummah (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) had the most wives.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And Allah has made for you from yourselves spouses and made for you from your spouses sons and grandchildren and provided for you from the good things. Then do they believe in falsehood and disbelieve in the favor of Allah?” (An-Nahl: 72)
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asking about the worship of the Prophet. When they were informed of it, they deemed it little and said, “Where are we compared to the Prophet, whose past and future sins have been forgiven?” One of them said, “As for me, I will pray all night forever.” Another said, “I will fast continuously and never break my fast.” The third said, “I will keep away from women and never marry.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then came to them and said, “Are you the ones who said such-and-such? By Allah, indeed I am the one who fears Allah the most among you and is most dutiful to Him, but I fast and break my fast, I pray and sleep, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah has no connection with me.”
It is also narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When a servant marries, he has completed half of his religion, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There are three whose help is a right upon Allah: the one striving in the path of Allah, the contracted slave who intends to pay off (his contract), and the one who marries wanting chastity.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves spouses that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect.” (Ar-Rum: 21)
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Nothing has been seen for two who love one another like nikah (marriage).”
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The whole world is an enjoyment, and the best enjoyment of the world is a righteous woman.”
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “From the happiness of the son of Adam are three things, and from the misery of the son of Adam are three things. From his happiness is a righteous wife, a good dwelling, and a good mount; and from his misery is a bad wife, a bad dwelling, and a bad mount.”
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Marry, for indeed I will boast of your great numbers before the nations on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O group of young men, whoever among you is able to afford the means to marry, let him marry; and whoever is not able, then upon him is fasting, for it will be a protection for him.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And live with them in kindness.” (An-Nisa: 19)
Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade celibacy (completely abstaining from women). Zayd ibn Akhzam added (in his narration), and Qatadah recited the verse: “And indeed We sent messengers before you and made for them wives and offspring.”
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is no marriage except with a guardian.”

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed Allah has prohibited through breastfeeding what He has prohibited through lineage.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And (forbidden to you is) that you combine two sisters (in marriage) at the same time, except what has already passed.” (An-Nisa: 23)
Fayruz (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have accepted Islam and I have two sisters (as wives) under me.” He said: “Divorce whichever of the two you wish.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A woman and her paternal aunt are not to be combined (in marriage to one man), nor a woman and her maternal aunt.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry those that please you of women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then (marry only) one or those your right hands possess. That is more suitable that you may not incline (to injustice).” (An-Nisa: 3)
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Ghilan ibn Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam while he had ten wives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “Keep four of them (and separate from the rest).”
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) took charge (of the caliphate), he addressed the people and said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted us temporary marriage (mut'ah) three times, then he forbade it. By Allah, if I ever find anyone practicing mut'ah while he is married (muhsan), I will certainly stone him with stones, unless he brings me four witnesses who testify that the Messenger of Allah allowed it after having forbidden it.”

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), “Which women are best?” He said: “The one who pleases him (her husband) when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands, and does not go against him with regard to herself or his wealth in a way that he dislikes.”
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If a woman prays her five (daily) prayers, fasts her (month of) Ramadan, guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: ‘Enter Paradise from whichever of its gates you wish.’”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best women who ride camels (i.e. the best among women) are the righteous women of Quraysh: they are the kindest to their children when they are small and the best in protecting the wealth of their husbands.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A woman is married for four reasons: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty, and for her religion. So attain success by choosing the one who is religious, may your hands be dusty (i.e. may you prosper).”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (seeking marriage), then marry (your women) to him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation in the land and widespread corruption.”
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that some of you sell over the sale of others, and that a man propose over the proposal of his brother until the first suitor leaves off or gives him permission.
Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man: “Do you accept that I marry you to so-and-so (woman)?” He replied, “Yes.” Then he said to the woman: “Do you accept that I marry you to so-and-so (man)?” She replied, “Yes.” So he married one of them to the other.
Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I proposed to a woman, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “Have you looked at her?” I said, “No.” He said: “Then look at her, for that is more likely to create affection between you.”
Allah the Exalted said: “And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe.” (Al-Baqarah: 221)
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A woman is not to marry another woman (i.e. act as her guardian), nor is a woman to marry herself off. Indeed, the woman who marries herself off is a fornicator.”

If she remains silent, that is her permission; and if she refuses, then there is no (valid) marriage over her.”
Khansa bint Khidam al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that her father married her off while she was a previously married woman (widow/divorcee), and she disliked that. She then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he annulled that marriage.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a virgin girl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned that her father had married her off while she disliked it, so the Prophet gave her the choice (to keep the marriage or end it).
Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the khutbah of need: “Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our souls and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whomever He misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger. ‘O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims’ (Aal ‘Imran: 102). ‘O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate, and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and (respect) the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer’ (An-Nisa: 1). ‘O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will then amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success’ (Al-Ahzab: 70–71).”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would offer congratulations to a person who had married, he would say: “Baarakallahu laka, wa baaraka ‘alayka, wa jama‘a baynakuma fi khayr (May Allah bless you, and bless upon you, and bring you together in goodness).”
Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Announce the nikah (marriage).”
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to her): “Are you not pleased to be my wife in this world and the Hereafter?” She said, “Why not?” He said: “Then you are my wife in this world and the Hereafter.”
Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I was the companion of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who prepared her and brought her to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him (for marriage)), and there were some women with me. She said: By Allah, we did not find any food with him except a cup of milk. He drank from it, then passed it to Aishah. The girl felt shy, so we said, “Do not reject the hand of the Messenger of Allah; take it from him.” So she took it shyly and drank from it. Then he said: “Pass it to your companions.” We said, “We do not feel like it.” He said: “Do not combine hunger and lying.” She said: So I said, “O Messenger of Allah, if one of us says about something that we desire, ‘I do not desire it,’ is this considered lying after that?” He said: “Indeed, lying is written as lying, even to the point that a small lie is written as a small lie.”
Allah the Exalted said: “Your wives are a place of sowing for you, so come to your place of cultivation as you wish.” (Al-Baqarah: 223)
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Prophet: “O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy have taken all the rewards: they pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they give charity from the excess of their wealth.” He said: “Has not Allah made for you what you can give as charity? Indeed, every tasbihah (saying ‘Subhan Allah’) is charity, every takbirah (saying ‘Allahu Akbar’) is charity, every tahmidah (saying ‘Alhamdulillah’) is charity, every tahlilah (saying ‘La ilaha illallah’) is charity, enjoining good is charity, forbidding evil is charity, and in the sexual act of each one of you there is charity.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, does one of us come to fulfill his desire and he will have a reward in that?” He said: “Do you not see that if he were to put it in haram (unlawful intercourse), he would have a sin? Likewise, when he puts it in halal (lawful intercourse), he has a reward.”
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If one of you, when he goes to his wife (for intercourse), says: ‘Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna ash-shaytan wa jannib ash-shaytan ma razaqtana (In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You provide for us),’ and then it is decreed that they have a child from that union, Satan will never harm him.”

Reward for marital relations
Allah the Exalted said: “Your wives are a place of sowing for you, so come to your place of cultivation as you wish.” (Al-Baqarah: 223)
Hadith 39

The supplication for marital relations
Hadith 40
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If one of you, when he goes to his wife (for intercourse), says: ‘Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna ash-shaytan wa jannib ash-shaytan ma razaqtana (In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You provide for us),’ and then it is decreed that they have a child from that union, Satan will never harm him.”
