❖ Question:

When praying on a mount (ride/vehicle), should the hands be folded during standing (qiyām)?

❖ Answer:

Yes, in every obligatory and voluntary prayer, folding the hands is necessary. This is the way of the Prophets in their prayer.

❖ Evidence:

Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

إنا معشر الأنبياء أمرنا أن نؤخر سحورنا، ونعجل فطرنا، وأن نمسك بأيماننا على شمائلنا فى صلاتنا

“We, the group of Prophets, were commanded to delay our suḥūr, to hasten our ifṭār, and to place our right hand over our left hand in prayer.”
(Al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr by al-Ṭabarānī 11/199 – authentic chain)

— Imām Ibn Ḥibbān (1770) declared this ṣaḥīḥ.
— Ḥāfiẓ al-Suyūlī (رحمه الله) also graded its chain as ṣaḥīḥ. (Tanwīr al-Ḥawālik, 1/133)

❖ Important Note:

The Prophet ﷺ commanded the Ummah to pray as he prayed. All the Prophets (عليهم السلام) prayed with their hands folded. There is no authentic proof that the Prophet ﷺ ever prayed with hands left open.
