False Story of Imām al-Bukhārī Praying Tahajjud After Tarawih

The Story Attributed to Imām al-Bukhārī About Praying Tahajjud After Tarawih – What Is the Truth?
(Excerpt: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah – Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām, Vol. 2, p. 484)

Question:

Anwar Khurshid Deobandi, citing al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar’s Hady al-Sārī, Muqaddimah Fatḥ al-Bārī (Vol. 2, p. 253), stated that:

“Imām al-Bukhārī used to pray Tahajjud after Tarawih.”
(Ḥadīth aur Ahl-e-Ḥadīth, p. 683)

Is this statement authentic?
Also, are the verses of poetry associated with this story established with a sound chain of narration?

Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله mentioned a narration in which one of the narrators is named either Maqsim, Musbiḥ, Nusbiḥ ibn Saʿīd, or Saʿd. In some manuscripts, the name appears as Fasīḥ or Masīḥ.

The details can be seen in the following references:

  • Hady al-Sārī, p. 481
  • Tārīkh Baghdād, Vol. 2, p. 12
  • Tārīkh Dimashq, Vol. 55, p. 58

However, upon examination:

  • None of these names are found in the reliable books of narrator biographies (kutub asmāʾ al-rijāl).
  • Therefore, the narrator is majhūl (unknown).

Conclusion:

This makes the story false and baseless.
There is no authentic chain of narration proving that Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله prayed Tahajjud after Tarawih in the manner described.
Likewise, the poetry linked to this story is not established with a sound chain.

Allah knows best.
