Exposing the Myth: Is Takfīr Really Rampant in Society?

❖ The Rising Clamor of Takfīr and Its Reality ❖

📌 Takfīr: The Clamor and the Reality

A new mindset is emerging these days, accusing religious scholars (ʿUlamā) of engaging in unwarranted takfīr (declaring someone a disbeliever). Proponents of modern ideologies portray the impression that takfīr has become widespread in society, as though every scholar is determined to declare someone a disbeliever. According to them, each Islamic sect considers the others outside the fold of Islam.

But is this really the case? Has any notable or influential takfīrī fatwā been observed in recent years? The reality is that society has not echoed with such a fatwā, and even if one was issued somewhere, it failed to gain public popularity or implementation.

📍 Why the Clamor Over Takfīr?

Why is the impression being created that society has become overwhelmed with takfīrī tendencies? It seems that individuals inclined towards modern secular thinking are unable to find a solid foundation for their narrative.

In the past, some religious scholars did issue takfīrī fatāwā, but now scholars have become much more cautious.
As a result, secular and modernist circles are resorting to portraying themselves as oppressed, so their arguments may carry more weight.
Some individuals deliberately engage in sensitive discussions, hoping that a scholar might issue a fatwā against them, allowing them to play the victim card.
But when this does not happen, they fabricate propaganda to portray the impression that “the scholars are calling us disbelievers.”

🎯 Propaganda Against Takfīr and Its Underlying Objectives

It is evident that certain circles are campaigning against takfīr in order to ultimately abolish the very notion — thereby blurring the clear line between Islam and disbelief.

❶ When a democrat acts against the principles of democracy, criticism arises against them for being undemocratic.
❷ In the same manner, when someone openly denies fundamental Islamic beliefs, why then is there astonishment when they are accused of being outside the fold of Islam?

🕌 The Boundaries of Islam and Genuine Takfīr

Islam has its own teachings and boundaries. There are certain core beliefs whose denial indeed renders one outside the fold of Islam.

Thus, while the indiscriminate use of takfīr may be disliked, the rejection of genuine takfīr is also not acceptable.

This is precisely why, when a legitimate fatwā of disbelief is issued, even some secular segments are compelled to stand with the Muslims.

✿ Conclusion:

The noise about takfīr often lacks substance. It serves more as a tool for modernists to shield themselves from Islamic accountability. True takfīr remains a serious and well-defined concept in Islam — not to be misused, but also not to be denied.
