❖ Special Duha Prayer on Friday: A Fabricated Innovation

◈ Is there a specific Duha (forenoon) prayer for Friday?

There is no established evidence for performing a specific Duha prayer on Friday. Rather, such a practice is classified as an innovation (بدعت) and a reprehensible act (منکر).

❖ Fabricated Ḥadīth and Its Full Text

Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Whoever performs four rak‘ahs of Duha prayer on Friday, reciting in each rak‘ah Sūrah al-Fātiḥah ten times, Sūrah al-Falaq ten times, Sūrah al-Nās ten times, Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ ten times, Sūrah al-Kāfirūn ten times, and Āyat al-Kursī ten times—after completing four rak‘ahs, he should recite the tashahhud, offer salām, and then say:

‘Subḥānallāh, Alḥamdulillāh, Lā ilāha illallāh, Allāhu Akbar, wa Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh al-ʿAliyy al-ʿAẓīm’—seventy times.

Then say: ‘Astaghfirullāh alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa, Ghāfir al-dhunūb, wa atūbu ilayh’—seventy times.

Whoever performs this prayer and these remembrances in the described manner, Allah will protect him from the evil of night and day, the evil of the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, of humans, of every oppressive ruler and rebellious devil. By the One Who sent me with the truth! Even if he were disobedient to his parents, Allah would grant him the reward of obedience to them, forgive him, fulfill seventy needs of the Hereafter and seventy needs of this world.

The Prophet ﷺ further said: By the One Who sent me with the truth! He shall be rewarded like Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, Yaḥyā, and ʿĪsā عليه السلام, and no thief will attack him, nor will anyone recognize his belongings."

◈ This ḥadīth is fabricated (موضوع) and falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.

The chain of transmission is filled with unknown and unreliable narrators, and the content contradicts established Islamic principles.

Chain Defects:

Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz – unknown identity.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Qaṭṭān – undefined and unauthenticated.

Khalf ibn ʿAlī al-Qaṭīʿī – not known to be reliable.

Muḥammad ibn Ḍarīs – biographical details not available.

➎ The narration contains ʿanʿanah from Sufyān al-Thawrī, and it is known that he did not hear from Mujāhid.

📚 Refer to Tārīkh Iṣbahān by Abū Nuʿaym (1/229) and al-Targhīb wal-Tarhīb by Abū al-Qāsim al-Iṣbahānī (3/10–11, Ḥadīth: 1966), where a missing link (Lays ibn Abī Sulaym) is noted between Sufyān and Mujāhid.

Furthermore, Lays ibn Abī Sulaym is considered weak and of poor memory by the majority of hadith critics.

❖ Testimonies of Hadith Scholars

Imām Ibn Ḥibbān said about Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ Abū Jaʿfar al-Makkī al-Shamūmī:

شيخ كان بمكة يضع الحديث.

“A shaykh in Makkah who used to fabricate aḥādīth.”

📚 al-Thiqāt: 8/26

Imām Ibn ʿAdī رحمه الله said about Saʿd ibn Saʿīd al-Jurjānī Abū Saʿīd:

He was known to narrate rare and strange reports from Sufyān al-Thawrī and others. Though pious, he would narrate these out of negligence rather than deceit. Nonetheless, his narrations are isolated and unreliable.

📚 al-Kāmil fī Ḍuʿafā’ al-Rijāl: 3/357–358

“This ḥadīth is undoubtedly fabricated upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. May Allah not bless the one who fabricated it. How despicable is this fabrication—to claim that offering just two rak‘ahs earns the reward equal to Mūsā and ʿĪsā عليهما السلام! The narration contains multiple unknown individuals, any of whom may be responsible for this forgery.”

📚 al-Mawḍūʿāt: 2/417

“This contains unknown narrators who fabricated it and attributed it to al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ.”

📚 Talkhīṣ al-Mawḍūʿāt: p. 180

Imām al-Suyūṭī رحمه الله said:

“Al-Shīrāzī cited this in al-Alqāb through various routes from Sufyān. There is no doubt about its fabrication. Its poor wording, corrupt composition, and numerous contradictions with Sharīʿah confirm its falsity.”

He further stated:
Abū Nuʿaym also reported it in his book Qurbān al-Muttaqīn with both connected and disconnected chains from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه and concluded:

“There are missing words, and the marks of fabrication are clearly visible.”

📚 al-La’ālī al-Maṣnūʿah: 2/37
