❖ The Question
Do jinn really exist?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
It is the unanimous and agreed-upon belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah that jinn do exist. Their existence is established by:
✔ Clear Qurʾānic texts
✔ Mutawātir aḥādīth
✔ Reports from the Salaf
✔ Consensus of the Ummah
✔ Direct observation
Philosophers and others may deny their existence, but such denial holds no value. To completely reject the existence of jinn is explicit disbelief (kufr), as it entails rejecting numerous verses of the Qurʾān and authentic aḥādīth.
❀ Imām Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Qasṭallānī رحمه الله (d. 923H) said:
قد دلت على وجودهم نصوص الكتاب والسنة مع إجماع كافة العلماء فى عصر الصحابة والتابعين عليه وتواتر نقله عن الأنبياء صلوات الله وسلامه عليهم تواترا ظاهرا يعلمه الخاص والعام فلا عبرة بإنكار الفلاسفة والباطنية وغيرهم ذلك.
“The existence of jinn is proven by the Qurʾān and Sunnah, as well as the consensus of all scholars in the era of the Companions and the Tābiʿīn. It has also been transmitted with clear tawātur from the previous Prophets, known to both the elite and the common people. Therefore, the denial of philosophers, Bāṭinīs, and others holds no weight.”
(Sharḥ al-Qasṭallānī, 5/303)
❖ Conclusion
The existence of jinn is an established reality in Islam. Denying it contradicts the Qurʾān, Sunnah, consensus, and the unanimous position of the Salaf, and such rejection amounts to kufr.
