Etiquettes of Drinking Water and Performing Istinja (Purification After Relieving Oneself)

Hadith on the Etiquettes of Drinking and Istinja

Narrated by Abu Qatada (رضي الله عنه), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"When any of you drinks water, he should not breathe into the vessel. And when he goes to the toilet, he should not touch his private part with his right hand, nor should he clean himself with his right hand."
[Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]

Verification and Referencing: Sahih Bukhari (153, 154, 5630), Sahih Muslim (267)

Key Points Derived from the Hadith

Etiquettes of Drinking Water

Do not breathe into the drinking vessel.
Water should be consumed in three sips, removing the mouth from the vessel each time.
Breathing into the vessel is discouraged as it creates discomfort for others and introduces germs into the water, which can cause stomach-related diseases.
Blowing into hot beverages (such as milk or tea) to cool them or into water to remove floating particles is also discouraged.

Etiquettes of Istinja (Purification After Relieving Oneself)

Do not touch the private parts with the right hand while using the toilet.
Do not use the right hand for washing (istinja).
A separate vessel should be used for taking water for istinja. If unavailable, flowing water from a river or stream can be used by cupping the hands.
If one has no choice (e.g., if the left hand is injured or absent), then using the right hand for cleaning is permitted out of necessity.
