❖ Question:

Can envy (ḥasad) create enmity in the heart of the envious person?

❖ Answer:

Yes.
The envious person begins to develop enmity towards people, as proven by the following ḥadīth:

It is narrated from Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما that he reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

“When you are granted victory over Rome and Persia, what kind of people will you become then?”
ʿAbdur Rahmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه replied: “We will say the same as Allah has commanded us.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Or will it be otherwise? You will begin to compete with one another, then you will envy one another, then you will turn your backs on each other, then you will develop mutual hatred, or something similar. Then you will go towards the poor among the Muhājirīn and place some of them upon the necks of others.”

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth no. 2962 | Sunan Ibn Mājah, Ḥadīth no. 3996]
