Enlightenment and Women's Rights: Reform or Family Breakdown?

❖ Enlightenment, Women's Rights, and the Stability of the Family System ❖

✦ Social Issues and Our Responsibility

When a social issue is highlighted in our society, instead of seriously reflecting and seeking solutions, many either completely ignore it or subject it to unwarranted interpretations, doubts, and objections by comparing it with religious and cultural values. Particularly when such issues are raised in the West, rather than addressing them within our own socio-cultural framework, we often resort to blunt opposition.

✦ Distinction Between Women's Rights and Feminist Freedom

The reality is that certain liberal circles are conflating the concepts of women's rights and feminist freedom in a way that is complicating problems instead of resolving them. As a result, not only is domestic life being disturbed, but social values are also being weakened.

The notions of feminist freedom being imported into our society have roots in a Western ideology that has already eroded the sanctity of family and relationships. Unfortunately, certain elements among us are now nurturing this movement, with the aim of prioritizing gender intermixing over social norms, and pushing women out of the framework of home life into complete autonomy.

✦ Being Educated Does Not Mean Being Confrontational

Being educated does not mean responding defiantly to every situation. True wisdom lies in exercising understanding and restraint. However, under the influence of modern liberalism, some women are disrupting their own family lives through their attitudes. A common narrative claims that men cannot tolerate intelligent women, but the truth is that men deal with countless intelligent individuals in daily life—why would he not be able to tolerate an intelligent wife?

The real issue is that some women prioritize independence and autonomy over balance in marital life, leading to strained domestic relationships.

✦ Real Issues and Practical Solutions

Women should focus on real, practical concerns rather than adopting imported and irrelevant ideologies such as Western feminist freedom. For example:

Promoting simple and easy marriages
Eliminating the curse of dowry
Reducing issues in marital life
Freedom from unnecessary in-law cultural pressures

If women genuinely wish to fight for their rights, they should demand reforms that improve their real lives—not agendas that weaken the institution of the family.

✦ Boundaries of Enlightenment and Social Responsibility

Women must remember that after marriage, the charm of the home and the survival of the family depend largely on their behavior. If they step outside the foundational structures of society in the name of enlightenment, the path of return may become difficult.

On the other hand, men must not consider women merely as bearers of responsibility, but should provide support, protection, and fair treatment both in domestic and social life, so that women can truly actualize their potential.

✦ The Need for Social Reform

Our society must earnestly examine and revise traditions that contribute to the exploitation of women. Both Islam and national law emphasize the safeguarding of women's rights, therefore, instead of outright rejection of feminist movements, we must take bold and constructive measures to guide these voices in a positive and socially responsible direction.

Only through this balanced approach can we prevent social disorder and promote a stable and dignified society for both men and women.
