❖ Question

Is Du‘a al-Istiftah (the opening supplication) in Salah an obligation (fard) or a Sunnah?

❖ Answer

Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!

Reciting Du‘a al-Istiftah in Salah — whether the prayer is obligatory or voluntary — is Sunnah, not wajib or fard.

Reading Different Supplications is Sunnah

  • A person should read all the supplications authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ.
  • It is better to sometimes read one and sometimes another, so that all the Sunnah methods are practiced.
  • If a person knows only one supplication and always recites it, there is no harm.

The Prophet ﷺ’s Practice of Variety

It appears from the Sunnah that:

  • The Prophet ﷺ would recite different wordings in Du‘a al-Istiftah, in tashahhud, and in post-prayer remembrances.

Two Major Benefits of This Variety

① Protection from Monotony and Maintaining Focus

  • If one always recites the same supplication, it becomes a mere habit.
  • Such words may roll off the tongue even in heedlessness, without the heart being present.
  • By reciting different supplications:
    ❀ The heart stays attentive.
❀ One recites with understanding of the meanings.
❀ Khushu‘ (humility) in Salah is preserved.

② Ease for the Ummah

  • It allows flexibility and ease for the people.
  • A person can choose a supplication according to his mood or state at the time.
  • This is why certain acts of worship have been legislated in multiple valid ways.

Examples:

  • Different authentic versions of Du‘a al-Istiftah.
  • Various wordings of the tashahhud.
  • Different phrases of remembrance after Salah.

In all such cases, it is Sunnah to sometimes do one and sometimes another.
