❖ Question

Is drinking Zamzam water while standing considered an act of reward? If so, what is the reason?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Drinking Zamzam water while standing is permissible without any dislike, because the Noble Prophet ﷺ himself drank Zamzam water while standing.

❖ Evidences

◈ In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Tirmidhī, and other books of ḥadīth, the narration is reported:

“Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ drank Zamzam water while standing.”
(Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ashriba, Bāb al-Shurb Qā’iman, 6/2248; Muslim, Kitāb al-Ashriba, Bāb fī al-Shurb min Zamzam Qā’iman, 3/1601, Ḥadīth 2027; Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Ashriba, Bāb mā Jā’a fī al-Rukhsah fī al-Shurb Qā’iman, 4/301, Ḥadīth 1882)

◈ Imām al-Suyūṭī (رحمه الله) stated:

“This narration clarifies permissibility.”
(Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī, 3/111)

❖ Why is Zamzam Drunk While Standing?

◈ Zamzam water is purely beneficial and blessed.
◈ The objective of drinking while standing is that the water may be consumed in abundance.
◈ Its blessing spreads quickly throughout the body.
◈ Hence, drinking Zamzam while standing carries no prohibition or dislike.
◈ This ruling is specific to Zamzam water due to its unique qualities, and is not the same as ordinary water.

❖ Is Drinking Zamzam While Standing a Cause of Reward?

◈ There is no explicit evidence proving that drinking Zamzam while standing is itself a source of reward.
◈ The ḥadīth scholar of Delhi (Muḥaddith Dihlawī رحمه الله) said:

“The claim that drinking Zamzam while standing is a cause of reward has no evidence that I have come across.”
(Muḥaddith Dehli, Vol. 8, Issue 10, Muḥarram 1360H / February 1941)

❖ Conclusion

◈ Drinking Zamzam water while standing is permissible and established from the Sunnah.
◈ There is no clear evidence that doing so with the intention of reward is legislated.
◈ Its consumption should be with the intention of blessing and benefit, as practiced by the Prophet ﷺ.
