Dog’s Reaction to Adhan – Shar‘i Explanation and Practical Solution

Question:
In our village, there is a dog that produces a particular long howling sound (like “ko-ko”) during the Adhan of our mosque, especially at Maghrib, ‘Isha, and Fajr. Interestingly, there are two other mosques in the area (of the Barelwi school of thought), but the dog does not react this way to their Adhan.
Two questions arise from this:

➊ Why does the dog do this?
➋ How should we deal with it?

Answer:
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d!

Reason for the Dog’s Behavior
This is most likely due to its satanic nature, as mentioned in Hadith:

“Whenever the Adhan is pronounced, Shaytan flees while passing wind, so that he will not hear the call to prayer. When the Adhan ends, he comes back…”
(Bukhari – Kitab al-Adhan, Bab Fadl al-Adhan; Muslim – Kitab al-Salat, Bab Fadl al-Adhan wa Harab al-Shaytan ‘inda Samā‘ihi)

Since a dog cannot physically flee like Shaytan, it instead begins to howl or bark, unable to withstand the spiritual force of the Adhan.

Solution:
At the time of Adhan, recite Ta‘awwudh (A‘udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim). Additionally, for a few days, drive the dog away during the Adhan so that it becomes accustomed to staying silent.

Why Not at Other Mosques?
As for why it does not howl at the other mosques’ Adhan, a possible reason is that:

"رہ گئی رسم اذاں، روحِ بلالی نہ رہی"

“The outward form of the Adhan remains, but its true spirit and impact, as in the Adhan of Bilal (رضي الله عنه), is absent.”
