❀ Ruling on Extracting a Tooth While Fasting
Source: Fatāwā Arkan-e-Islam
✦ The Question
What is the Islamic ruling for a fasting person undergoing a tooth or molar extraction? Does it invalidate the fast?
✦ Shar‘i Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
✔ Having a tooth or molar extracted while fasting does not invalidate the fast.
✦ Explanation and Reasoning
❖ If blood comes out as a result of the extraction, it still does not break the fast, because:
◈ The act of extracting a tooth is a medical treatment, not consumption or nourishment.
◈ The bleeding involved is not similar to cupping (ḥijāmah), where significant blood loss might weaken the body.
◈ In cupping, there is a possibility of physical exhaustion, which is why some Hadith suggest it may affect the fast.
◈ But tooth extraction is a necessary medical procedure and does not equate to nourishment or deliberate intake.
✔ Conditions to Observe:
✔ Care should be taken that nothing reaches the throat or stomach — such as blood, water, or medication during the procedure.
✔ The mouth should be properly rinsed and cleaned to avoid accidental swallowing.
✔ Conclusion:
Action | Ruling on Fast | Notes |
---|---|---|
❀ Tooth or molar extraction | ![]() | No issue as long as nothing is swallowed |

⚠ The person should avoid swallowing anything during the procedure to ensure the fast remains intact.
