❖ Question:

Does the Prophet ﷺ personally hear the salutations (Durūd) recited at his blessed grave? Kindly explain with evidence.

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

A narration states that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ عِنْدَ قَبْرِي سَمِعْتُهُ وَمَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ نَائِيًا أُبْلِغْتُهُ"
“Whoever sends blessings upon me near my grave, I hear him. And whoever sends blessings upon me from afar, it is conveyed to me.”

This narration has been mentioned in several books, but the hadith scholars (muḥaddithīn) have declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) or fabricated (mawḍūʿ).

❖ Authentication of the Narration:

This narration has been reported in the following sources:

  • Kitāb al-Ḍuʿafāʾ by al-ʿUqaylī (4/136–137)
  • Muṣannafāt Abī Jaʿfar ibn al-Bakhtarī (735)
  • Shuʿab al-Īmān by al-Bayhaqī (1583)
  • Kitāb al-Mawḍūʿāt by Ibn al-Jawzī (1/303, ḥadīth no. 562)
  • Amālī Ibn Shamʿūn (255)
  • Tārīkh Dimashq (59/220)

❖ Comments of the Hadith Scholars on the Chain of Narration:

Imām al-ʿUqaylī رحمه الله said:

"لَا أَصْلَ لَهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ الْأَعْمَشِ"
“There is no basis for this from the narration of al-Aʿmash.”
(al-Ḍuʿafāʾ by al-ʿUqaylī 4/137)

Imām Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said:

"هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا يَصِحُّ"
“This hadith is not authentic.”
(al-Mawḍūʿāt 1/303)

❖ Status of Narrator Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Muḥammad ibn Marwān al-Suddī:

  • Ibn Numayr رحمه الله said: “Liar (Kadhdhāb).”
    (al-Ḍuʿafāʾ by al-ʿUqaylī 1/136)
  • Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله and Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī رحمه الله said:
“His narrations are not to be written at all.”
    (al-Ḍuʿafāʾ aṣ-Ṣaghīr: 350, al-Jarḥ wa at-Taʿdīl 8/86)
  • Ibn Ḥibbān رحمه الله said:
“He used to narrate fabricated hadiths from trustworthy narrators.”
    (al-Majrūḥīn 2/286)

✅ Conclusion Regarding This Narration:

This narration is fabricated (mawḍūʿ) and falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.

❖ The Authentic Hadith Regarding the Conveyance of Salutations at the Grave:

An authentic narration states that the angels of Allah roam the earth and convey the greetings of the Ummah to the Prophet ﷺ.

📖 (Sunan an-Nasā’ī 3/43, ḥadīth no. 1283; Faḍl aṣ-Ṣalāh ʿala an-Nabī ﷺ by Ismāʿīl ibn Isḥāq al-Qāḍī: 21 – Chain is authentic)

Imām Sufyān ath-Thawrī رحمه الله explicitly mentions “hearing” in this hadith.

✿ Final Conclusion:

There is no authentic evidence to prove that the Prophet ﷺ personally hears the salutations recited at his blessed grave.

The correct method of sending salutations and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ is to recite it wherever one is, and Allah's angels convey it to him ﷺ.

The narrations presented to support the idea that the Prophet ﷺ hears the salutation specifically at his grave are either weak or fabricated.
