Does Sodomy Break the Fast? Islamic Ruling and Expiation Explained

❖ Does Sodomy (Liwāṭah) Break the Fast?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Does sodomy (anal intercourse) invalidate the fast?

❖ Answer:

Sodomy (لِوَاطَت) is a form of fornication (zinā) — in fact, it is more grievous than conventional fornication.
It breaks the fast, and both qaḍāʼ (making up the fast) and kaffārah (expiation) become obligatory upon the one who commits it.

ʿAllāmah Ḥusayn bin Maḥmūd al-Maẓharī al-Ḥanafī (d. 727 AH) wrote:

“Zinā, linguistically, refers to engaging in sexual intercourse in the private part through unlawful means. Included under zinā are sodomy (liwāṭah) and bestiality.”

📘 al-Mafātīḥ fī Sharḥ al-Maṣābīḥ: 1/96

✅ Summary:

Sodomy is an unlawful sexual act and worse than zinā.
② Committing it invalidates the fast.
Qaḍāʼ and kaffārah are both required for the one who commits this act.
