Does Forgetting a Verse or Word in Recitation Require Sujūd al-Sahw?

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadīyah, Vol. 1, p. 345

Question:

If during recitation in prayer, a verse or a word is mistakenly omitted, does this necessitate Sujūd al-Sahw (the prostration of forgetfulness)?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

If a person, while reciting in prayer, forgets a verse, or a word from a verse is mistakenly left out, then Sujūd al-Sahw does not become obligatory in such a case.

Sujūd al-Sahw is only required when there is an addition or omission in the actual acts of prayer.

✿ Simply forgetting a word or verse during recitation does not necessitate Sujūd al-Sahw, as long as it does not affect the essential pillars (arkān) or obligations (wājibāt) of the prayer.

✿ Therefore, merely leaving out a verse or a word in recitation does not make Sujūd al-Sahw obligatory.
