❖ Question:
Does a woman’s ‘iddah begin from the time her husband divorces her, or from the time she is informed about the divorce?
❖ Answer:
Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d!
The ‘iddah begins from the time the husband pronounces the divorce, not from the time the wife comes to know about it.
Evidence from the Qur’an:
﴿وَإِذَا طَلَّقۡتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَبَلَغۡنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ﴾
(al-Baqarah: 232)
“When you divorce women and they reach the end of their ‘iddah…”
This verse clarifies that the counting of ‘iddah starts from the act of divorce itself.
