Do souls return to their homes?
Souls do not return to the world. They live a barzakh life with Allah ﷻ and remain detached from worldly matters.
❀ Allah ﷻ says:
(Al-Zumar: 42)
“Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died, in their sleep. Then He withholds those upon whom He has decreed death, and sends the others back until an appointed term. Indeed, in this are signs for a people who reflect.”
❀ In the explanation of this verse, Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما said:
“The souls of the dead and the living meet in dreams and converse with one another. Then Allah withholds the souls of the dead and sends back the souls of the living to their bodies.”
(Al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ by al-Ṭabarānī: 122, chain ḥasan)
